A lot of people are tarring all Italian fans, which is grossly unfair - fans of the Milan clubs don't have a reputation, and the last time Juve fans were involved in serious crowd trouble they were on the receiving end of it *ahem* - Lazio fans are, for lack of a better term, the Leeds fans of Italy.

We might be fierce rivals and get tetchy with each other on here sometimes, but something like this puts it all into perspective.

Absolute disgrace and completely cowardly attack on fans who just went to enjoy a trip overseas to support their team.

The fact they even had CS gas makes it even more disturbing. What else do they have in their arsenal, exactly? Tanks?
    (Okay, maybe not tanks...)

However, some of the calls that Lazio should be booted out of the competition for this are plain wrong, for the simple reason this didn't happen in or around the stadium, or even on the day of the game - Lazio the club can't be held responsible, so can't be punished. Serious questions need to be asked of the Roman police, though.

It was an organised attack by people intent on causing serious harm. Absolute disgrace and utterly reprehensible behaviour. I think some of the support that Lazio have is questionable, but this seems to have been carried out by hardcore thugs and has very little to do with football. I just hope the poor guy who was stabbed makes a full recovery.

Two of those arrested have been identified as Roma fans. Seems to be a suggestion that Ultras from both the Rome clubs were working together.

It might be a more regular occurance than we thought whether Spurs fans are there or not...

"The Marcellus amphitheater sits on the border of the Jewish Ghetto. The Jewish community in Rome was founded on trading and their financial and medical skills were an integral part of Roman life. Their persecution began in the mid 16th Century when the Catholic church forced then to live in a walled enclosure with a nighttime curfew. This punishment only ceased in 1848.
The predominant symbol of the Jewish Ghetto is the Synagogue which sits on the banks of the Tiber River overlooking the Tiber island and Trastevere."

In 84 we decided to stay in the beach area in Rimini before the final, the weather was hot enough to sleep on the beach and the plan was to travel up to Rome the next day for the final, we had a great day until late on when Roma and Lazio fans on foot and on scooters started chasing us all along the coast rd and beach with knives.

Can't remember exactly but before, during and after the final somewhere in the region of 50 Liverpool supporters were stabbed, hospitalised or beaten up.

There was one time they easily beat the Britons when at a 10-to-1 disadvantage, and the Britons were playing at home...

The Britons beat some easy opposition, then talked up their chances against quality opposition and lost. In many ways, Boadicea was the first England fan...

This is a ridiculous statement Inda. I lived in Rome for a year, the Drunken Ship has an extremely good reputation. You cannot claim that two incidents in the last 7/8 years mean that all foreigners should avoid the bar - the fact is it has a reputation, rightly, for being the social hub of foreign nationals living in Rome. It is quite understandable that British football fans, who are unlikely to speak Italian, will want to go to an anglophone friendly environment in a city which often treats English speakers quite rudely.
