Twitter is simply a method of communication not really any different to the telephone. In of itself it is not inherently good or bad it is as good or bad as the people using it. Twitter has been used for many good things such as helping to accelerate the social protests in Arab Spring countries that are now going through a democratic process as a result. It can also of course also also be used for anyone to spout useless and sometimes offensive drivel. However that is not twitter's fault, that is the responsibility of the person spouting the drivel. People like this need to be educated that once you put something out there on twitter et al it is in the public domain and cannot be taken back. Don't need to get rid of twitter we need to get rid of idiots, East London seems a good place to start right now...........

The difference between a telephone and Twitter is that no-one else can hear your telephone conversation! and even if you regret later what you say on twitter someone will post it on a football forum! (yes I'm another old tw*t)

I think you've hit the nail on the head SKTB. We seem to do that in this country. A man goes on the rampage with a pistol, we ban pistols. No wonder we're in such a sh*t state.

Agree entirely, government policies generally far too short sighted to make any real difference just skim the surface of the problem enough to look popualr and get re-elected and never look into and address the root causes.

One of the best proverb/quotes I have seen on the matter is " A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in"

Sorry slightly away from topic there, back on topic

I also like "it is better to be silent and thought a fool, than open your mouth and remove all doubt" very apt for a forum I think

To me, this is a no-brainer. I agree with the cricket bat analogy because it should obviously be the person who is to blame, not the tool which he uses. To condemn Twitter as being the root of the problem is misguided, and it's definitely wrong to say nothing good can come of it. However, I believe that people who are constantly in the media spotlight, such as footballers, should make the decision for themselves not to publicise their personal lives. I agree with the "old twats" on here who say that Twitter is just not worth it. You can try and convince yourselves that it's just a convenient method of communication, but you know that's a load of crap. There are loads of ways of communicating nowadays, and Twitter is not even nearly the most convenient.

Whether you value your privacy or not (and you should), it seems fairly obvious that you're better off communicating by phone, text or even Facebook. I've had a Twitter account for about a year now, but it only took me a couple of days of using it to figure out that it's pretty silly. Talk of banning it would be absolutely ridiculous, and I very rarely support the notion of banning anything, but it would be a smart move to make the decision for yourself not to use it.

Oh and just to deviate slightly from the topic, but in response to Kate's earlier comment, I defy any of you to give me a decent reason why ownership of guns shouldn't be illegal.

In farming guns are needed.

Well yeah obviously there are sensible conditions under which you can get a license, but...you know...apart from that. There is no good reason I should be allowed to own a gun, yet many would make the case that we all should.

What do they actually use them for? Honestly i dont know and there is probably a very good reason. I assume its something to do with animals?

The farmers I've known with shotguns use them to shoot at old cars, deer, pigeons and squirrels.

Helps you go to fancy dress as James Bond.

This is the problem isn't it. It's fun. The only thing I ever disagreed with Hunter S. Thompson on was his stance on guns. His only reasoning was that he ****ing loved shooting at stuff.

Adam will be fine, firstly we don't even know if the rumors have any substance, but even in the worst case he's got a great support net work here & a lot going for him.
But, if any good comes out of this, maybe it highlights the risk of high profile social networking. What if a couple days before a final or another crucial game, some wannabe tries the same thing with another pro-player? Footballers need to consider this, its a risk, it can effect your state of mind. Is it worth it, I'd say its not, but I'd leave the choice to the pro.

Well Farmers are ment to use them to stop pests attacking their life stock and plants. Look at the incident a few months ago when dogs were attacking sheep. I'm sure if the farmer had not had a gun he would have lost far more life stock.

If all of it is true then I don't think he will be fine. She's his fiancee and also pregnant with his child, think that'll be a pretty big hit to him.

Why is everyone assuming the story is true? He could have left for any number of reasons.
