I don't mean similar in terms of how they play or their abilities. They tend to tread the exact same areas of the pitch. Think of Cleverley's recent England outings. he buzzes around just behind the number 10 area from left to right. Adam does this same area. The only difference is that Cleverley tries to play people in from that area whereas Adam is looking to take people on if it is a better option. Playing Cleverley as CM in a 4-2-3-1 will leave him lost in the middle of nowhere. I can only see the usual 4-4-2 with Gerrard and Cleverley taking it in turns to cover each other while the other goes forward and that always ends up in chaos for England. If they wanted to play 4-2-3-1 then should have left one of Sturridge, Lallana, Townsend or Cleverley on the bench. I bet Rooney ends up having to get next to Gerrard to get on the ball with Cleverley drifting from wing to wing. They will start 4-4-2 though and within minutes it will have turned to 4-5-1 as Rooney, Lallana and Townsend get pulled into covering the centre 2.
Sadly for JRod, I suspect that Hodgson will want Lambert to get some game time which will reduce Jay's chances. I think Jay's best chance is to be brilliant for us and hope fate works for him. He hasn't really had a chance as the Chile game was so difficult...he had little opportunity to shine...a lot to expect him to be fantastic when no one else was. The question is: is it better to get one unexpected England cap or no cap at all. He should probably aim for the Euros....after all it was looking like Lallana had dibbed out after his first call up, but he has had another chance.
