Did you also read about the US bloke who, having an argument with his girlfriend, shot off two rounds while pointing his gun above him. In doing so he killed his daughter, who had been hiding away from the argument, upstairs in a bedroom. He's been sentenced to 6 years in prison. His daughter..? Well, perversely her sentence was death without being given a chance:

I do wonder, from this side of the pond, whether the USA will ever awake from their Hollywood Western dream.

The thought of the public making decisions like that scare me. Watch a Jeremy Kyle show or a similar program and think that in a referendum, these people will be deciding my life.

I'm dead against an EU referendum, because the country will probably vote to leave, which is a really stupid idea.

That may be the case but it does not add one iota of credit to his argument.

Clegg is an inept posh boy but Farage and his band of twisted nutcases would destroy this country and impoverish us all.

Absolutely spot on. I believe in democracy but sometimes, just sometimes you know you just cannot rely on people to make the correct decision.

I am sick to death of little Englanders and people who think we are some sort of mighty power on the world stage. Very dangerous thinking.

The EU has brought peace and prosperity to Europe and to vote to leave it would be the action of fools.

Agree 100%. The rise of UKIP, and for that matter the Scottish Nationalsts, is the result of the legitimate fears of millions of people being twisted in the wrong direction by the press and sensationalist media, whose only motive is to sell more newspapers and Sky subscriptions. The destiny of mankind is to unite, not divide. The alternative can only lead to more conflict, which will make people's lives more miserable than they already are.

Same, but I do want us to be less spineless when Germany try to force us to accept a rule etc. Some of the rules the EU has are stupid.

The government don't really help themselves out tho. People that are very poor see other people come here and get help straight away. This is why UKIP etc are gaining voters. Some people see the easy migration of people in the EU to the UK as a bad thing.

I really wish we would bring in some sort of Australia type of law were people that will help this country can be welcome, were as the spoungers haven't a chance.

Other countries don't accept them, so there's no reason why we should have to.

Anyway, if there is a referendum, I intend to turn to academia to look at both sides of the argument and then make an informed decision, ignoring the sensationalist rubbish of the media and politicians.

It's a real pain, this democracy thing, isn't it? Some people even have the effrontery to vote against what I believe, in elections.

Well, that's the point being made. The problem isn't a difference in opinion, people can think what they want - the problem is a lack of understanding. Most people voting won't understand the consequences of what they're voting for and the arguments for either side, they're voting purely on media sensationalism, the headlines papers are leading with and maybe, just maybe, which one of Farage and Clegg they liked the look of most.

That's right! Why don't we wait until we can be sure that everyone will vote the right way...THEN we can vote and THAT will be democracy? (Of course, if we vote the wrong way, we can always be made to keep voting until we get it right, which is the good old EU way)

Sounds like a General Election. Maybe we should get rid of them too?

Damn straight. When people stop voting based on reasoning like "Miliband looks like Wallace from Wallace and Gromit", and "Cameron is a toff", breconsaint's point will be valid.

I reckon they might actually vote to stay.....and then everyone can shut up about it forever. Just imagine.

Whether we should have gone into Europe is one issue (I voted yes, because it seemed right at the time), but, now we are in, it would be hell to get out. Just like the Scottish referendum, it could be down to passion not sense. A referendum could be a disaster.

Got to start somewhere. How about the media discussing the facts concerning trade, EU contributions, legal powers, border controls amongst other things. Whatever one's viewpoint, it should be debated.

Dismissing anyone anti-EU as " little Englanders" whilst at the same time as "people who think we are some sort of mighty power on the world stage" seems a tad contradictory to me. (Sorry Godders)

Apologies if posted elsewhere, I see that the England stickers collection includes Rickie, JRod and Lallana (but no Shaw). I'm sure our England players loved their kits, caps and match time, but surely the little boy still inside them was thrilled to see themselves in a sticker album. Would take them back to their own childhood. Bet they buy them from their local newsagents hidden in a brown paper bag. :)

Nah, once we grant the people one referendum, they'll start demanding one for everything. It'll never end.

"Oh, that referendum didn't go the way we'd have liked? Do over! Let's have another one!"

Before you know it the public will be voting on wars and whether or not we should have the death penalty. True democracy is ******ed and we don't want to give the public a sniff of it.

Nope. If an opinion poll came out with 95% in favour of remaining in the EU, I'd still be against a referendum for the reason stated above.
