You are right....smaller class sizes would be better......by your deliberation it would seem you agree with the way the private sector teach to achieve standards. So why would you want to close them.....surely it would be better to bring public schools up to their standard.
As for the fact it depends on what school you go to to achieve the right academic qualifications to qualify for the top universities.
Once upon a time this would have been true.....not in my opinion these days. There are many, many examples around to day of people going to the very top universities from very humble beginnings. From a couple of class mates of mine who went through the state education system to members of my own family that finished up at Oxford.
When I meet old classmates it would seem better than 50% went on through the public education system and ended up at good universities.
Probably around 20% became qualified tradesmen 4 went into the forces as did I....
I think education actually starts at home with the guidance of the parents which hopefully should guide you. They are the ones in the main that know you best and can see what you are capable of. (I agree there is exceptions to this but I mean in the main)
We as children do not always agree but that is life and is does depend on how much you respect your parents and their views.
Better than 70% get it about right first time the others well that is conjecture!!

I know, and apologise if you took offence, but I was mainly referring to University students and graduates.

I had one year of private education and I have to say the difference in quality is massive. It does seem unfair that not all kids can have access to education of that standard, because there was really nothing about it that seemed like it should be expensive. It was just a teacher and a small group of students having a conversation over a book for an hour or two.

Sadly the state schools where we live our dire so Mrs L and I took the painful decision to put both our boys through private school. Something I never thought I would do. The difference is huge and fortunately they are both doing well. You pay a huge price though. I'm glad we did it but its financial suicide!

My sis had to go private for a MRA scan. They messed her about for over a year on the NHS so she paid £800 to go private.

    Yeah, I looked.

That little old lady was frightened out of her wits and angry because there was nothing she could do to protect herself and nobody was there to help her. Most appear to have found it amusing on Youtube. The fact that the lads were only doing it for a laugh is neither here nor there. The old lady wasn't aware of that.

    Don't get old..!

Indeed. One would like to think that in 70 years [if they live that long], payback would arrive. See how it feels to be alone, frightened and helpless.

Simple. Benefit fraud and tax evasion. Avoidance is legal. If the government don't like people doing it, make it illegal by closing loopholes. I wouldn't expect to be arrested for driving at 69 mph in a 70 mph zone, because "morally" I should be driving at 60.

HMRC don't see it as being legal.
