They are big yes... but not very good. Someone like Kompany, Hummels, Vidic, Subotic that's what we really need.
I disagree, those big commanding CBs are dinosaurs these days. Tevez, Silva, Mata, Aguero, Suarez, etc will run circles round them. Terry was a liability in the PL last year. Vermaelen and Koscielney are the new breed of CB. Look for Kompany to be dropped before the end of the year by Man City. He had a great year last year, but he will not be able to repeat it.
Kompany will be dropped? Absolutely no chance, the guy is incredible and will continue to be a force. Kaboul is another giant centre back who absolutely immense last season.
What have you been smoking mate? Defenders on average have actually got taller. Even ball playing teams like Barca see the need to field a ballwinner (pique). In the EPL it's even more necessary due to the direct nature of some teams. Take a look at the stats of europes top teams compared to ours. United, city, Dortmund, Real, Barca, Juventus all field at least one tall ball winning centre half.
I disagree. Real Madrid won in Spain this year with Pepe at 6' 2" and Sergio Ramos at 6' 0". I think we need to anticipate changes rather than blindly copying other teams.
Real Madrid actually have a pretty damn big side. Arbeloa(6'0)-Pepe(6'2)-Ramos(6'0)-Marcelo(5'10) -----------------Khedra(6'2)--------------- (also Albiol at 6'3 started 17 league games) Then there's Ronaldo (6'1), Di Maria(6'0), Alonso (6'0) Kaka(6'1), Benzema (6'0) etc... And this is in a league where there is less physical contact allowed and no Sam Allardyce's, Mark Hughes etc.. (Boring us to death with long ball tactics.) I wasn't purely talking about height though in my original post. You can to a certain extent make up for a lack of height with physical strength, explosiveness and aggression. It will be very interesting to see who Wenger picks as his first choice pairing when everyone is fit.
Koscielny and Vermaelen or Koscielny and Mertesacker. Koscielny starts every game if he is fit, it's about time you accepted that.
Wanna bet? If RVP goes chances are very high Vermaelen will be made captain. (he's currently Vice-Captain) Captaincy would all but confirm a starting place and leave the other spot to be fought over by Kos, Mert and Djourou.
Sure, I'm never one to turn down making some easy money. You don't leave the best CB in the league on the bench.
I agree with that. I'm not totally against a big guy, and obviously if you can find someone who is 6'4" and everything else as well, then great, but tall is no longer mandatory like it used to be in the old days, mobility however is mandatory. I was always against Hangeland coming to Arsenal and I am concerned about Metersacker. Having said that, in the right game, and with the right people around him, I am sure a big slow guy can be an asset.
