No he wasn't. He was a massive part of the shambles our defence became last year. His positional sense is awful, he looks nervy, he's nowhere near as good in the air as he should be and his reading of the game is piss poor. Add to that the fact he's injury prone and he sounds like a total sulker and I wouldn't go near him with a barge pole. Having spent the best part of £20 mill on him Rodgers then felt the need to go out and buy his replacement 6 months later (unfortunately he's been even bloody worse). Tells us all we need to know and now he's favouring Kolo bloody Toure over the pair of them. Best part of £40mill spent and a 36 year old free is getting in ahead of both, and putting them to shame at the same time. It's just a shame Rodgers didn't do that more often last year eh.
Going against the grain with some, but I like the look of Sakho. He's had a dodgy spell or two during games last season but overall I think he is a solid CB. He's having language/communication problems apparently,on top of this injury that seems to be going on and on. Very good in the air, quick over the ground.Hope he returns soon, could be one of the answers to our defensive an shambles
We seem to have mixed views on our defence, I actually rate Lovren but admit he's been poor the problem is he needs a communicator with him someone who can tell him when to attack a ball and when to hold his position. Fantasy footy again and a bit of time travel but imo this would solve all our issues. Manquillo Hyppia Lovren Moreno Someone who knows how to control a back 4 means that we are better organised and therefore a tighter unit. So to me Rodgers and Co at fault again the wrong player was bought in Lovren unless he was going to bring Fonte with him. We ahve a whole bunch of useless center backs and not one communicator amoung them, get one in and we should improve.
Bill - do not agree at all re. Sakho's positioning and reading of the game but yet you rate Skrtel who is far worse! One example of Sakho's intelligence is how he adapted his game when he first played alongside Lovren against Spus. Both are naturally aggressive defenders and both were going for every ball. Sakho realised that Lovren was attacking everything so Sakho dropped off and became the sweeper and covered his partner. Something that Skrtel does not have a clue about because he's selfish and sh*t. Sakho gets a rough time because he looks awkward but he's far better on the ball than Skrtel or Lovren. At least Sakho will carry the ball forward and pass forward with intent. Skrtel and Lovren look conventional so they are perceived to be confident on the ball yet all they do is pass backwards and sideways. Has Sakho been brilliant? No because he's clearly on low confidence which isn't help by the shoddy way Rodgers has treated him, he's had to babysit players like Skrtel and Flannagan on both sides with Stevie in front him, and an inept keeper behind him. Skrtel is a sorry excuse of a defender - the fact that he's 29 and he still needs babysitting says it all. And without a scapegoat next to him i.e. Lovren, people can no focus on how poor he really is.
Skrtel's selfish?? Bizarre comment that JS. You seem to think I rate Skrtel really highly (which suggests you only cherry pick the parts of my posts that you want to). I've said on many occassions that there are far better defenders out there than MS. The simple fact is though we haven't got them at Anfield. Sakho obviously wasn't good enough to stop Rodgers paying out £20mill for Lovren and not even good enough so far for him to drop Skrtel. As for Sakho dropping off because Lovren was attacking everything....every single English teams defence I've ever seen that performs at the top level has two centre backs who are aggressive at times. If there's one thing you can't level at MS it's that he doesn't go in for challenges aggresively (it's often one of the sticks used to beat him). Backing off because your fellow centre half is being too aggressive isn't something you should be praising, if Sakho is the "organiser" you say he is then shouldn't he be ensuring Lovren calms down a bit. Is it not also possible Sakho backing off was the reason Lovren was having to try and attack everything in the first place? I'm amazed by the idea you think Sakho is a great ball carrying defender. He's been so far removed from that it's untrue. You want a good ball carrying defender....we just kicked one of them out of the door in the summer (who fair enough had a shocking injury record....unlike Sakho eh ) We'll never agree on this unless the lad gets a really long run in the team and if he does, and looks as solid as he does in your head then I'll hold my hands up. He may well blossom into a total beast for us but as of yet he's not been anywhere near good enough to earn some of the praise he gets on this board (IMO).
lads... agger was ****ed... he was a shado of his former self... which btw was a shadow of sami hyppia.. Sahko is not a beast. skertl is not hard, never was never will be. any more myths about lfc players being better than they actualyl really are need busting?
TBH I would like Lovren and Sakho to start. They are (in theory) the future and we invested £40m on the pair. This season is a no hoper anyway so we may as well get that partnership bedded in, unlike Toure who is still error prone and is leaving at the end of the season anyway.
