01482 can I ask you about two more Hull City run things which works with children? What do you think about Kickz and about the coaching system which goes in schools throughout the year and involves the sponsored kick?

Within football, or within any profession in life, I'm afraid it's always going to be who you know, not what you know.

Someone can be ten times more eductated than the competition, but if the competition is the bosses son's dog walker's fiancee then you're ****ed.

Got a phone call today from Kris Blakestone asking to bring my lad down to the Monday night training. They knew his name already after a coach from the Tigers Trust at the KC had mentioned it. He was training at the KC 18 months ago so it shows they are aware of local talent.

    Just a quick update.
My lad went down on to the monday night session at the Centre Of Excellence and was trained by Owen.
Really enjoyed it he said, I watched for a bit but had to shoot off for a hospital appointment.

I wanted to post about how good my Grandson is and how he will be a very good player when the time is right, but it sounded to boastful and that's not fair on him really.
My post is about one of my relatives in Hull, who went through the system and was signed as a YTS player at 16,for City. But never got pro contract Why?
Because he could not compete off the pitch with the who you know brigade.
Would he really have been good enough? Who knows, he had his chance but it did not bear fruit.
Hull at one time had 3 under 16 international players, non of whom ever played pro.
It happens in every sport. I coached hockey players for years and if they where any good they had to play for one of the big 3 local clubs. Our youth team won every match one year, league champs, youth cup champs and not one of the squad got a county trial. 5 of them left us for the biggest club, 4 went straight into the county team that season whilst one became the top scorer in the national league, only to be told that he needed to change clubs to get into the GB squad!
Great players in any sport will always do well, but sometimes it helps to know the right people.

Nothing wrong with telling people how good your Grandson is, its something to be proud of.
