For a club that will become ever more reliant on its academy output over the coming years, to not have learned any lessons from the Tymon and Clark debacles is criminal in the extreme. 10 years in charge and they still don't know how to actually deal with people.

A someone commented earlier, it's currently a 'lose lose'. The very worst combination. What a stupidly ridiculous situation Ehab has created here.

It seems clear it's Ehab taking the stance, including instructing McCann that he can't start him ... as 'punishment'. If that isn't the case, I stand ready to be corrected. Possibly our most valuable future asset and that's what Ehab thinks is right to do with him. FFS.

Half a season of consistent performance and it's in L1, he will be a great player but he's still in his breakthrough season... I think your the man in the know and able to answer this, is it normal to have say a 3 year contract but when you reach the end the club can pull out the extra 1 year clause?

Its a negotiation. Both sides ask for what they think they can get then, (hopefully) compromise on a middle position. It appears from reports, that KLP and agent have compromised, but have reached the limit of what they are prepared to accept. Ehab, as usual, has to "win" at all costs. I suspect this policy is why we are now in League 1 as opposed to the Championship. Sometimes the cost of "win at all costs" is too high but I expect this has not occurred to Ehab, who doesn't seem too bright.

We've also got Dan Batty at the end of his current contract at the end of this season. Whilst he's not an automatic first teamer, he's someone you wouldn't want to walk away for nothing.

It's quite common on both sides, club side they just have a flat out option to do it or not, from a player's side it can be based on appearances, goals, assist l, team points or final league position and once a certain criteria is hit the extension automatically applies. It can be a contract length extension or a wage rise and on occasion it can be both

So let’s even the debate up. My post is intended to demonstrate that we don’t know what has happened and that maybe, we should consider another view.

KLP: I like him as a player and from when I met him as a person. He has an agent who pushed us for large increase. KLP knows the club, how it would react and how it treats players. He knows how McCann deals with players who want better terms than their teammates get. He isn’t Bowen and is only just beyond the development stage. He will not get regular starts in a Championship side.
That said he does want to play for City and when he comes on, he is fully committed.

McCann: He has perhaps the biggest naughty step in football. His mantra appears to be; being committed isn’t enough, to play for me, you have to be fully committed or you lose your place.

Ehab: Sets his position in stone and will not move from it. He sets a budget and is committed to it. This includes reviewing player values and keeping a firm hand on spending. Great when it gets us out of a financial hole, but very difficult in a team sport to manage. We never see his man management skills and so assume he has none.

The team: They must feel “here we go again” . Jordy is the new Where’s Wally. Do they sign a contact only to see another player get a better deal, just because their agent pushes harder for one and think “bollocks”. Or do they look at the player and say “greedy bastard?”

The Max Clark who was a regular in our team and because of his promise got a move to a Dutch top tier side and is now linked with a Premier League move on a semi-regular basis?

The Max Clark we could have got a fee for and a sell on-clause for future profit from?

The reason we get ourselves into this position is because we're not very good at looking at the long term. For every player you lose money on because they are on a longer contract than you might want, you'll gain some money from the ones who you can make some money from but are tied into a long term contract.

Too often we lose the negotiating position because we run the contracts down before we make a move. Whilst it'll save you some money, it'll also give us these problems. I'd rather be in the opposite camp.

This is weird because the club has made a point of buying young promising players recently.

We had to keep Kingsley as he was on a longer contract then we got rid of him ASAP
We have a far better left back than Clark now and a very promising young left back as his understudy
Clark was a likeable lad but not very good and didn’t progress from a top 14 year old

I don't agree, I thought Clark looked promising, made mistakes but was doing OK.

Regardless, he's improved since he left us and could have made us some money, which would probably have paid off Kingsley's contract and more.

Yes its risk v reward but as it stands we aren't taking the risk and therefore not getting the reward.
