Fair play on you for admitting this - most people stick their head in the sand and insist SAF had some mythical bottomless pit of money he threw around back then. Net spend figures are even more embarrassing for most clubs, as we sold so many good players round then and replaced them with youth. From 1992-2001 the net spend figures are (approx) £69m - Liverpool £60m - Chelsea £53m - Newcastle £35m - Utd £33m - Arsenal £27m - City Yes, I **** you not, Liverpool spent twice as much as us to win next to **** all, and City managed to spend just £8m less despite one relegation and the sum total of precisely **** all. You can probably see now why we rate SAF so highly Not right now tbh - we are making progress under LVG and don't want to end up chopping and changing all over the place. Give him a couple more years then see where we stand imo.
Can't argue against facts. Alex did a hell of a job back then. Time will tell how Jose does though. Whoever takes Klopp on will have a legend in my opinion. This guy is charismatic and has an attractive style of football. I hope you guys stick to LVG too .
Yep. Thats why United should keep him even if we miss the CL this season. The chopping and changing of managers sets a terrible trend. It is almost self perpetuating. Moyes did very badly in his first season but he had so many mitigating factors (following a super-legend, declining and demotivated players, etc) I was prepared to give him another season. But now that we have LVG to replace him with Klopp or even Pep (if he was available) after one season would be counterproductive.
No team will dominate in the foreseeable the way United did. Most seasons it was United plus another, whether that was Leeds, Arsenal, Blackburn, Chelsea, Newcastle, Villa. But now you could go into a season and have 4-5 realistic contenders. Most years you could have a very good idea who the top 2 would be. Who could categorically say who the top 2 will be next year?
I'm beginning to think with what Van Gaal is trying to embed at United he could very well be the stalking horse that sets the foundation for Guardiola. Somewhat like Barca.
