Hughes, the Stoke manager, has agreed a deal to take Assaidi on loan for the season and could give him his debut against Walsall in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday night.

Stoke will now listen to offers for Kightly, the former Wolves player, as Hughes moves to trim his squad.

England international goalkeeper Jack Butland is also poised to leave on loan, with Sheffield Wednesday the latest Championship club to express an interest in signing him.

Stoke are also interested in West Bromwich Albion forward Peter Odemwingie, who is a target for Welsh rivals Swansea and Cardiff.

Cameron Jerome has emerged as a target for Reading and Wigan, while Ryan Shotton is also wanted by Owen Coyle.

Assaidi, the Morocco international, only made four appearances for Liverpool last season and has admitted his first campaign in English football was difficult..

He said: "It was frustrating last season, especially having not been given too many opportunities on the pitch, but I am here now and I am looking forward to playing in the Premier League.

"When I did play last season I thought I did well, and the experiences I did have on the field has given me an understanding of what to expect in the Premier League."
