    Would like to have kept him as part of the squad strength but as i only see him as being backup next season it may turn out to be good business if we receive a decent sum for him and can use that money to replace him or strengthen elsewhere. Far worse things could happen than lose him certainly.

    Also I think Nolan was trying to use his popularity to orchestrate a better deal for himself, I heard he was offered a 4 year deal but turned it down as he wanted a 5 year one. He probably thought Ashley would crumble as the fans would kick off, however business-wise it would be dangerous to offer a player who seems to play 5 years above his current age a 5 year deal. Especially in this current climate!

    I feel Nolans main motive was that he wanted first team football, and stability in terms of contract towards the end of his career! That Newcastle couldnt offer!!
