No Bob, you're not under surveillance by me pal, but I can't say about anyone else out there - you'd better ask aber :bandit:.................<laugh>

Negotiating a footballer's terms to get his signature on a contract can be a tricky task at Prem level - ask Malky.

Like I said, in hindsight, Jones on those sort of terms in January was a big mistake by those involved. On the other hand, if he'd stuck another half a dozen goals in and kept us up, everyone would be signing a different tune right now.

There's no real comparisons to be drawn from the acquisitions of Cornelius and Jones other than the fact that they were both mistakes - I suppose it comes down to a matter of degree.

Would it not be fair to say barring the obvious injury problem he had at the start of the season, Cornelius sticking in half a dozen goals would also have had everyone singing the different tune though Spark?

Both costly mistakes by the looks of it.Who would want to be a manager these days eh Spark? Every day you survive is a bonus.<ok>

I was making the comparison with Jones, so what you have just written is exactly my point. Try to keep up. <doh>

Admittedly two wrongs don't make a right, but the only reason Jones was brought in was because of the fiasco over Cornelius. The injury he suffered and little that we saw of Cornelius made it clear that we had no viable target man up front to hold the ball up, and as hard as Campbell tried, he was as good as useless in that role.

We were lightweight at the sharp end with him, Odemwingie, Mason and Maynard totally unsuited to the need.

In reality, Ole obviously had far fewer options available for that position in January with the limited money made available to him. Jones as an option to solve the problem was a mistake no question, but that was clearly only evident after the fact, as some were actually calling for the club to get him in. Like I said - hindsight is a wonderful thing.

The bone of contention with bringing Jones in may well be the fact that he was given an 18 month contract rather than only for the rest of last season, but does anyone seriously think he'd have joined us for just that? He'd just as well have stayed where he was without the second season offer.

a compromise that if we stayed up he'd get an extra year perhaps. all means nothing now of course, we're stuck with him now.

if he rejected the chance of first team football here (effectively on loan if only til the end of the season), and would have been happy to sit out the rest of the season at stoke, then on that basis i wouldn't have signed him on that attitude alone.

I think most have accepted that the club (Ole? Dalman?) made a mistake with Jones as the answer to our Premier league problems last season.

As a straight swap for Odem, he was a "no cost" option who was viewed as the missing ingredient in our attacking lineup. The reality is that he was brought in to do a job and it didn't work. Leaving him where he was if he didn't just come to for the rest of the season sounds a great plan now.

No idea what his contract wages would have reduced to this season in the event our eventual relegation, but he can always move on if he can find a better deal. Having said that (and as others have alluded), he's a big lad and if he can find some of his previous form in the Championship, he could play a significant part for us this season.
