I thought we had money to burn , Butland for £6 Million was worth it , Buttner for £3 Million plus a good wage was worth it , it we try and half arse it we will go down . Bassong and Dawson as our back two would of been amazing , as it stands we have a championship defence .
The trouble with the first two is that somewhere in the deal either the club or a third party tried to take the piss or mess around with the deal. Cortese doesn't do business with that sort of people, he won't be held to ransom. That is a good thing, think about the Oxlade-Chamberlain transfer- he told Arsenal they had 1 hour to sort a price or the deal was off. I have to agree that Dawson would have been a good signing (and when I saw him available I did wonder if we would go for him). Apparently QPR offered 10 million for him, is he worth that- probably not. In the end he chose not to join QPR, from the sounds of things he didn't want to leave Spurs so doubt he would have joined us.
We need to spend over the top prices , until we have an established premiership squad our fingers are always going to be burnt , you can not do this on the cheap , or Corteses vision is not cheap its just whether he is prepared to pay for it .
We haven't done this on the cheap. We broke our record transfer twice in the summer and spent 29 million in total. We were the 5th highest spenders in the Premier League!!! Why should we pay over the top prices though? That's what Pompey did and that didn't work in the long run. I agree we need to create a Premier League team but Cortese's vision is not cheap. However, he has repeatedly said that he wants Saints to be debt free and self sustainable. That is probably one reason why there has been so much investment in the youth set up.
I would want these players: Goalkeeper: Jack Butland Left back: wayne bridge Centre back: michael dawson That way we have a decent young goalkeeper. Two realistic targets because like youd most want champions league football; plus these two players have experience of premier league which Clyne, fonte and hooiveld need! Who would you want?
Pompeys spending in a way is an urban myth , look how much they sold their players on for ? Debt free will only come with more fans and more academy players coming through and that will only come from success , that in turn will only come from spending .

But it also on the ridiculous wage bill that they accumulated- they did not have the income to support their outgoings. They also clearly did not learn their lesson after continuing to spend big money on wages- Lawrence et al after going into administration. I do not understand how you do not think we have spent money though????
http://www.transferleague.co.uk/premiership-transfers/portsmouth-transfers.html http://www.transferleague.co.uk/league-tables/transfer-league-table-last-five-seasons.html Just have a little look at that , it was the reckless spending off the field that did for them not the signings , Cortese would look after that , I suggest before diving in like others read a bit about things .
http://www.transferleague.co.uk/league-tables/transfer-league-table-1992-to-today.html And if you look at this one , of the established members of the Premiership we are bottom of the spending table , the conservative approach as history showed does not work .
What about wages? As a percentage of turnover, for example. Here's a hint - http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/davidbond/2010/04/buried_in_the_midst_of.html
So one of these links show that over the last 5 seasons we have spent the 10th most of all the Premier League teams. Even though those five years have been spent in either the Championship/League 1. I guess that kind of disproves your point that we have not spent money!
There was a little bit in the post that did mention off the field spending . They actually sold their players on for a large profit , something not talked about through ignorance or convenience .
No it proves we spent £28.5 million this season so therefore we would of only spent £5 odd million before that , that is all that proves .
