It really is amazing how good our GD is. When you consider how poor it was in 09/10, it shows just how much better our defence is this time around, and that's what you build PL survival on.

Macs first choice, always will be and Harper knows that and signed on as 2nd choice. He was retiring but decided to play onemore seasn with us as 2nd choice and I for one am pleased he did.

So what now when Mcgregor is available

Personally I think Harper has been fantastic in all hes played including the cup games and I would like to see him continue in goal.

whats everybody elses thoughts?

Keep Steve Harper in goal until after the Cardiff City game. Bring McGregor back for the home game with Newcastle Utd on march 1st imo.

McGregor has to learn to keep his cool no matter what. A few weeks out wont do AM any harm at all.

Does Harper have another year after this? I thought I'd read he had exercised a clause in appearances. Great signing by Brucie.
Big mac back in. Consistency in goalkeepers is very important and Steve might not be here next year

Got another year now so says Steve Bruce. Contract has been triggered by the games already started by Harper. Great news for both. imo.

What happens to Jak? Does he just continue with his loan?

Off back to Orient after tuesday ive been told. Mac will be free of suspension after tuesday.

There is no argument McGregor is first choice, though Harps is an excellent keeper and a great number 2. SB has done a great job getting them both in.

Agreed John. But i just have a feeling that SB will make Mac wait a wee bit longer.

Don't see how we can drop Harper if he keeps on keeping clean sheets. Yes Mac is no.1 but so is Joe Hart at Man City and he had a few weeks on their bench. If the players with the shirts keep performing well why make changes?

Because the other guy's better. It's really that simple.

What's better than keeping a clean sheet? I don't see why anyone should be guaranteed a starting place - its called competition for places. If Harper has a bad game or we get well beaten by someone fair enough but I don't see bringing Mac back in as being an automatic decision.

A clean sheet is down to the whole team - and frankly, after Brown's red card, Sunderland offered bugger all threat. Harper could have had a few nice cups of tea yesterday for all he had to do. Can you honestly tell me we wouldn't have had a clean sheet with McGregor in there instead?

No I'm not saying that and I am not denying that Mac is 1st choice keeper - but with a more than able deputy in Harper does that mean he automatically comes straight back in? Not necessarily in my book.

There's no place for sentiment when you're needing points. If there is a better player for that position then you play him. Mac to replace Harper at the soonest convenience.

Taking nothing away from Harper though, he's a brilliant backup keeper and has not let us down. McG is still suspended for the Southampton game, right?

The difference being that Hart was dropped because he kept making high profile mistakes.
