I know, I heard somewhere that Bristol City spent around 113% of their gate income on wages last year, How sustainable can that be? NOT VERY
Yeah if teams weren't funded by rich owners or sky money and it was just mercandise/advertising etc. reneuve that the club itself produces, there would still be a gap in the league and it would never be even. Eg. Man Utd would make loads more money than any other Prem League clubs and Wigan would be relegated straight away. It really wouldn't be even, there would be a gap that increased more and more, with clubs like City never being able to bridge the gap. They should just put a wage cap on generally, but keep the same TV money coming in. Put a wage cap of say £100k a week, so only the best players like Messi, Rooney, Ronaldo get that, and then average players like Joey Barton wouldn't be picking up £70,000 a week. That means that players like Balotelli and Tevez wouldn't choose to go to Man City even when they clearly don't want to be there. Then they should bring in another rule on home grown players - say 10 British players in your first team squad of 25, and then the extra Sky TV money would be spent on youth players and academies and ticket prices would ultimately come down.
Then they'd have to quit football, wouldn't they? They make a large slice of their money from sponsorship anyway, no doubt that would continue.
Isn't it rather sad we can just accept a footballer can be earning £70K to £100K. Cut their wage to £50K and reduce ticket prices, make football available to everyone again.
