So if I have understood correctly... Karlan Grant can leave in the summer, but any other football Club that wants to sign him up will have to pay compensation to Charlton Athletic. If CAFC proposes a compensation amount which is unacceptable to the other Club, a PFCC hearing is required so both Clubs can justify the level of compensation they feel is appropriate etc. etc. In short, Karlan Grant may walk away from Charlton in the summer, but he could find it difficult to find a new Club willing to lock horns with CAFC in the courts to decide how much compensation should be paid. So if CAFC are determined enough not to let him go, Grant may only have two realistic options until he is 24 years old; 1. Remain on Charlton's payroll. 2. Give up his career in football and make a living doing something else. I hope I am wrong about the amount of power the Club would appear to have over Grant's career right now. In reality perhaps other Clubs (especially a really big one like Rangers) wouldn't care less about haggling with Charlton over a compensation payment. Maybe it's all just seen as part of the game and maybe the compo payments are so low that nobody is discouraged. Basically, all I'm saying is if the kid wants to go he should be allowed to go. If the Club's contract offer is not to his liking and another Club can turn his head with a much better offer that's just the way it is. CAFC should never have let his contract run down to just a few months if they wanted to protect their investment.
Brentford currently consider Karlan to be worth £500k and a development fee would be less than that figure so Karlan having to give up the game would be unlikely. I understand that it costs Charlton about £2m pa to run the Academy, it is considered acceptable that where a player under the age of 24 is signed by another club that the acquiring club contributes to these development costs.
Dream scenario is obviously he stays til the summer, his goals aiding our promotion then he fvcks off, maybe I’m wrong but I can’t see him doing anything above league 1 level, think his goalscoring numbers owe a huge thank you to Lyle Taylor, this is a purple patch that will not continue much longer
I share your caution regarding Grant's potential to score goals at a higher level. Granted he is still young, but until this season Grant's goal scoring record even in League One was very poor indeed. It may well be that the partnership with Lyle Taylor is key to his sudden revival, helped by the confidence that his success has brought him. Grant leaving will obviously break up that partnership and be a severe challenge to his confidence. And confidence is a notoriously fragile thing for many players. The best option for Charlton is to maintain the Grant/Taylor partnership for the rest of this season with a real chance both players could end up with 20+ goals and our Club back in the Championship next season.
The way Grant was easily subdued by Sunderland's Flanagan makes me doubt whether Grant would do so well at a higher level. However, the partnership with Taylor is working, and we literally have no-one else this season, so losing him now would hit us hard.
As I haven't seen Karlan this year I'm a bit wary about commenting, but there is a swathe of opinion that he has forged a good partnership with Taylor, and sometimes while it's easy to see him miss a one on one at Shrewsbury, what goes less seen is that Taylor scores goals because Grant is causing the defenders to look elsewhere. It's not even that he provides asitance to Taylor, but his speed and presence demand marking and concern for the opposition. With 13 goals to his name, no manager would tell his defenders 'don't worry about that guy, he's not got the finish to bother us - keep an eye on Taylor). Sometimes there is just a chemistry in football which works, and I'm beginning to feel the Grant Taylor pairing may be of that type. I'd be gutted if Karlan moves on now that we are hitting our stride. Ajose may have been unfashionable, but we are scoring goals - bring in a back up by all means but we need Grant this year in my opinion.
i think he's upped his game by running more. his movement off the ball has improved, he helps get the ball back. but... on saturday he had 3 great chances and missed them all. a better player would have got 2 or 3 by taking it round the keeper or placing it better, not just shooting hard. his composure needs to be worked on and then he'll be a good player. i hope he stays, but i think bowyer could turn his replacement/another into an equally useful strike partner - there's not enough said about how actual coaching can improve a team. we've not had this level of skillful coaching since SCP left.
Don't get me wrong, I was not contesting your post. My point was that after buying the likes of Defoe, the likes of Ahearne-Grant would not be interesting Rangers. A belated Happy New Year to you
Personally I don't really rate Karlan, although I admit he has improved. His raw pace stretches defences but he brings very little else to the table. This season could be a flash in the pan. His "finishing" at Shrewsbury on Saturday stank the ground out like a pair of @baraettmattesvensson stripey socks. I would take Brentford's £500,000, as he is bound to leave for nothing this summer anyway.
they're 12th in L1, 4 points off 8th. they're punching above their weight. if he was given another £2m...
If the Belgian was offered £2m (from WBA) he would accept wouldn't he …. you just know … take the money dam the torpedo
