I went to church (CofE) regularly throughout my childhood. I can't say I particularly enjoyed, it was quite boring if I'm honest and there were things I would have preferred to have been doing, but all of the people that I met were good, kind people who cared for others.
Sadly, I think any organisation that is intended to help people will attract individuals who seek to take advantage of that for their own ends.
