I saw it on Sky Sports News and it seemed to me he went way beyond self-defence and gave the lout several really hard kicks when he was defenceless on the floor. You could say serves the lout right but the violence of his response gave the referee little option but to send him off for violent conduct (the rules of the game do not specify the violent conduct has to be against an opponent - that is why when team mates Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer were fighting in a match a few years ago they should have both been sent off). It was not clear to me if the manager took off his team because he was angry at the sending off or to protect his players against any further attacks but I cannot remember ever seeing anything like that happen in this country.

Defo a red card. There was that player at a league game last season who got a red card for aggressive action against a 'fan' on the pitch.
