No question he was superb in that game. He had the ability to beat the odd player and he was quite agile, certainly early in his career (but so was Tiss!!) but for me he could make some great runs and then too often try to beat just one more guy and lose it. You are absolutely right about Venables though. I still have my "Are you watching Venebles" T shirt. I think the back said something like "Gifted but Lazy" about the great one.
I hate Paul Gascoigne, I really do, I think he's a terrible excuse for a person, but even though his prime playing days were before my time as a regular football watcher everything I've seen of his playing ability has been stunning.
