Some of the supporters want clouting never mind criticising.
Some of the miseries are desperate for summat to whine about.

    What would you suggest, sending them on a course. . . . . .

First game that season, at Brentford - what an atmosphere. Proud to have been part of it.

You lot are bringing back the memories tonight.

I was living in London at the time and thought to go to the Southend game. When I got to whatever London station has trains to Southend, they had a notice saying the match was all ticket and not to travel without a ticket. "**** that" thought me, and I went anyway and had no problems paying at the turnstile.

I hope you are joking with this one mate, as there is no way on earth I'm going to go to games and shout 'Come on you fans'...
There was an article put on here recently from The Times regarding Sunderland going through an identity crisis, and for me that is exactly what has happened at the SoL in recent seasons, with many fans seemingly forgetting what supporting a team is all about..

That or remove the wallpaper in the kitchen!!

're the op. My Dad keeps going on about how bad we're playing and that di Canio won't last till Xmas etc. He is uber negative but can't see that everything he says after a match, di Canio is agreeing with!! Very negative this season. Doesn't rate Altidore either! I'm just chilling and enjoying the ride

That season was incredible ....... going in thousands to ramshackle little grounds and drinking the pubs dry
The landlord at the pub we were in, at Aldershot, send his wife to the cash & carry and hour before kick off!

Those days will never be seen again with Sunderland supporters in 4 parts of the ground and pubs set aside for us.

I know what you mean and the 80's/early 90's were a great time to be travelling with the lads as we did week in week out for some 14 years but in some ways, I dont want to go back to being the big fish in a small shallow pond anymore. We were the big game for 80% of the clubs we played in the lower division and the joke club when we played at a higher level.

I want us to now be one of the established EPL/top flight clubs and if that means we don't take over small towns like Aldershot, Bury, Chesterfield, etc etc and swamp their pubs and grounds, as there simply isn't the capacity to do so or just impossible in the likes of London, Manchester and the likes, then so be it. As a 17 year old lad in 1981/2 season which was my first on my own to away games I have travelled the length and breadth of England watching SAFC and I wouldn't swap any of those days but we have for the first time spent longer on the top flight than at any other time in my time and although we can (or I can) still moan and twist, in all honesty I love being in the EPL and have seen enough lower league football to last me out.

Great to reminisce yes, but give me top flight footy any-day over going to small time clubs and having a good swill,or maybe its an age thing as I approach my 50th year the standard of football is more important than the drinking.

Totally agree Cest ........ there's no logical reason Sunderland can't have some glory.

I wouldn't want to go back to the 'old days' and, tbh, it wouldn't be possible these days.
The big old terraces, at places like Rotherham are vanishing anyway and we wouldn't get the amount of 'tickets' we did then.

I still love going and can't wait for Arsenal & West Brom but the trouble is that the match days are bound to be less eventful.

In the pre satnav/mobile phone days it was often chaotic and the drink driving situation was slightly different!
Drive to the town, chance upon the ground, walk into the 'wrong' pub, turn up ticketless, go in the wrong section, get moved, come out and try to find the car afterwards.

These days are ticketed, drive straight to the ground, park where you're told, straight in, sit where you're supposed to and reverse the process afterwards.

I wouldn't want to go back to being ****e but there was more fun I reckon.

Drinking the pubs dry! Did that at Swindon before a 1-0 defeat once. They were down to bottles when we arrived and they didn't last long :)

That must have been when Hoddle scored that screamer, now I come to think about it. Great player. Shame he was such a twat.
