I don't think it is about being better rather than adding a different dimention and option to the other players.
I am starting ti believe in DT's theory that MH may play with a home team and an away team or at least it is starting to look that way.
I do agree with others, and with the above, which leads me to believing we do need a strong 'Samba type' CB to lead a strong defensively-minded away side!
Only if MH changes his preferred formation of 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1. Otherwise, show me how Park, Taarabt and Hoilett would fit into a 4-4-2. Having said that, I acknowledge that we need a strong squad to continue to improve and we heading in that direction. MH is paid the big bucks to sort it all out.
Fulham Chronicle now saying they believe he's signing tomorrow. Fingers crossed. Hang on, tomorrow isn't Thursday.
Very good post JD, your second of the day might I add. This is what it's all about when you try to build a good team, cheers for taking the time to construct that post. While we're on a different side re signing Hoilett and if it's worthwhile I have no problem agreeing with everything you say. For me I'd be perfectly fine if Hoilett decided to go elsewere, but at the same time I really want us to get him as he represent real quality imo. If he plays regularly his value will only rise and I see him as a £15+ player in the future, by that time though I hope we're not a selling club. At the end of the day there are only two things that matter, well for me at least. And that is; 1. If our manager and staff see the need to bring him in. For me that is good enough. 2. If our owners and Beard feel it's value for money and they decide to push it through then I am 100% behind them as they know their finance. Either way I'm happy. We don't need to sign any more players as I'm very happy with what we have. But at the same time if any recruits deemed needed by the above mentioned then bring 'em in. It's all very exciting ain't it? COYR's!
Your 'we already have one' line is uderstandable of the concern Rangers fans have because we are not used to haviing more than one or two decent players but to move on to the next level we need a squad full of quality. The point being missed is that he is better than Mackie, SWP, Tommy Smith etc. Some of the moaners are the same one's who were also complainig that our squad is too old. We now have a great yound player who will improve. Dont forget players get injured, suspended, out of form, tire in a game and need to be subbed, or even go to ACON for a month. We have added a qality signing who will continue to get better. I think you have a prettyu naive and oversimplified understanding of modern football tactics. Your Givet and Olsson comparison isnt valid as they cant be compared as so many differing factors to compare. As he mentioned earlier Hughes is more defensively cautious than the type to go all out attack without considering the holes it could leave at the back. Give Hughes and his backroom team more credit for their tactical awareness. They adjust taxctics after analysing each team and you should have more faith in them to be aware of some pretty basic football tactics like not leaving a left back exposed on their own. We are siging one of last seasons most impressive young players and we are moaning?! Only QPR fans could do that!!
Whilst I agree with what you are saying, signing players of Hoiletts ability...for free might I add, as he is out of contract, is VERY good business. Yes we need to fill other areas of the pitch, as you mentioned.....i.e a good central midfielder and a CB and/or RB......but having more options and a Plan B is essential in this league. You cant just have 1 quality player for each position and then say "hey ho, my jobs done"..... Had the club been chasing Hoillett for a fee to Blackburn, then I would see that as a bad move, but adding quality in depth is something Rangers have NEVER had.......one player gets injured or banned and we would be in the brown stuff.... I'd also like QPR to put together a decent cup run this year.....another reason to add more quality in depth. I get the feeling from some of the Rangers fans on this board that signing him would be a bad move, when it would be anything but!
I'm not sure many people are moaning as such. Simply debating the pros and cons. Have to say that since I've been reading others' opinions on this I realise that we need to make these additions to the squad if we are to keep progressing. As you say, injuries, suspensions and ACON all need covering.
Enjoyed reading JD's very well thought out appraisal. However, signing quality players like Hoilett simply adds to the younger guns we're going to need to take us further forward.
This is the key point. We are replacing championship standard squad players with young exciting prospects.
