I seem to remember Flamini basically saying that he would have stayed at Arsenal if they'd offered him more money
Come on now, don't be so parochial. Most fans on here and who I spoke to were not thrilled about RVP not signing a new contract but could live with RVP playing abroad. I'm sure he would've got a little abuse from a few fans but I doubt many would've begrudged him. But it's the fact he joined one of our biggest rivals (maybe not as much in recent years) which really stings. It's just one step below signing for Spurs as the ultimate sign of betrayal. Of course RVP is not solely to blame as I'm sure other factors beyond his control led him to Man Utd but this really leaves a sour taste in a lot of Arsenal fan's mouths. Not just him moving but for what he has said recently in the the Man Utd press conference. This coming from a man who claimed to be Arsenal's #1 fan. This coming from a man who said he didn't want to win trophies with any other team. No one would've begrudged him if it wasn't for his sickening hypocrisy.
It doesn't matter the reason why he went. The point i'm making is as football fans we are hypocrites. We moan about players that leave our club but are happy for our club to buy players from other teams.I'm not defending RVP as i've been voiciferous on here in my disgust at him leaving us but i do accept i'm being a little hypocritical
How is it being hypocritical? When Henry left, I honestly can't remember any Arsenal fans abusing him. He left for reasons which were understandable. He came back a legend because he respected the club. Even with Cesc, despite the circumstances in which he left, there is somewhat a little respect and understanding. I don't see people booing Toure or Clichy. Then you have pricks like Nasri and Adebayor, simply mercenaries and now add to the list RVP. The ungrateful swine after Arsenal stuck with his glass arse. This is how he repays us? Mr Hot shot has 1 1/2 decent seasons and he decides to **** off? That's a spit in the face. It's like being with a bird who was overweight from the day you were dating, and then she dumps you for another guy once she loses some weight and gets more male attention. That's the perfect analogy.
If RVP left to Juventus, or any other foreign club, whether it be Madrid, Milan, or Barca, I would have no enmity towards him. Obviously it would've hurt, as I feel he owed us, and should've signed a new contract, but no way would I consider him a traitor, a judas scum, and the current most hated former player in my eyes. The bastard can rot for all I care, and I hope he does rot, and am not shy to say it, I will take immense pleasure in seeing something go wrong for him.
wrong. The WORST aspect of this whole fiasco , is that he has gone to one of our MAIN rivals. Its a uphill task to keep up with united as it is. Then he goes there and it become even harder. Thanks dutchie. If he had gone abroad i would not have said a feckin word. I think a lot of people feel the same.
I actually think it's time us fans revisted our expectations of players, we are the only ones with unbridled loyalty (as entitled on another thread). The game has moved on, certainly from when I first stood on the North Bank to cheer on Pat Rice, Sammy Nelson, Willie Young and co, players these days are trained to be media friendly and the kissing of the badge, visiting local hospital at Christmas, posing for a picture with fans etc, this is all part of the manicured professional footballer, very rarely will he actually have any affiliation to his club because as RVP has proved any number of statements in the last year or so mean nothing. I read somewhere today that terms (salary) were agreed by Man Utd and RVP in January and the player has known since then that he'd be heading to OT. So whilst I am as angry as anyone about his lies and probably greed I know there'll be players kissing the badge tomorrow who will probably do the same in the future, it's a football disease and only us fans suffer because we're the only ones that care. I hear Dempsey is refusing to ever play for Fulham again, well if he joins us we should be prepared for similar behaviour if/when the City/Utd/Chelsea dollars are waved in his face in a year or twos time. Tottenham suffered similarly with Modric, like us they kidded themselves he really cared about the club because he kissed the badge a few times and gave some heartwarming interviews, he went on strike last year and has had no intention of ever pulling on a Tottenham shirt again since May. I even heard from a fairly reliable source that Song behaved like a prize twat when he became aware of Barca's interest refusing to train. So I've come to the conclusion that whilst we, the fans, will continue getting angry, upset and astounded at a players lack of loyalty, I think we need to remove emotion from the sport and especially ignore all statements players make because we know there is strong probability that at some stage in the future they will let us down.
He's got a young family that presumably like living here. He doesn't owe Arsenal anything and if Wenger sees fit to accept a £24m bid from United then it wouldn't make much sense to refuse to go out of some odd loyalty to a bunch of people he doesn't know. Why should he give a toss that it's now a more uphill task?
Are you that thick? At any other club Robin would have been gone a couple of years ago. Hell no one else wanted him, but which club gave him a chance? Arsenal. RvP would probably be a Championship player or something like that if not for Arsenal. So yes he owes us.
Wenger kept him on as he knew he could be useful. Arsenal aren't such a special club that out of the goodness of their collective heart only they would give a contract to an ugly duckling that miraculously becomes a swan. If Wenger didn't believe he'd become a more useful player he'd have bombed him out. He's an employee who had the chance to move to a bigger and better employer, nothing more or less. If you think he'd be a Championship player if it wasn't for Arsenal then I'm not the thick one.

Have to post this. That music.
Honest question...does this change your view of Sol Campbell's actions? Remember him lying about being Tottenham through and through? Or about how he wouldn't be signing for Arsenal? etc. etc.
Obviously the club on the receiving end will be ecstatic. There is nothing hypocritical about it. It's between us and RVP, and it was between Spurs fans and Campbell at that time. It's very normal for ManU fans to be happy about the signing, and the player's displayed character traits won't matter much to them. Did you guys even think about the Ajax fans when their Captain left them in his prime, with years left to his contract? Exactly... (not saying it's an ample comparison as he didn't leave for a rival, but he left for "greener grass", so to say)
I meant in terms of lying about his love of the club and going to a bitter rival? I think if he'd gone to Juventus it would have been disappointing but understandable to most gooners. We put up with papers, TV pundits, ex players and other fans telling us Campbell was right to leave to go to Arsenal. His lies were glossed by everyone. And to be honest I think he opened a door that others have happily walked through. Leaving is fine...players should simply have integrity...which many seem to lack. RVP's little boy quote is just so sickening yet he claims he left on good terms
