I'd never heard of him until the Euros. I remember him getting stuck in a bit. High energy levels.

I really hope we can get rid of Rodwell or Gibson then because we have far too many central mids if he signs.

Williams would be the only one at the club with real attacking intent in his arsenal. We've only got two good holding mids and two **** holding mids to choose from. His sort of player is massively needed. Glad Grayson has spotted it.

The Crystal Palace attacker looks set to move to the Stadium of Light on a season-long loan having spent time at Ipswich last season.
With bags of Championship experience and a strong international career behind him, Williams could be a smart acquisition by Simon Grayson.
But what do we know about the attacking midfielder? We take a look at Williams' career:
Who is he?
A 23-year-old attacking midfielder, comfortable playing behind the striker or out wide, Williams came through the youth system at Palace before breaking into the first team in 2011.
Initially used in the cup competitions, Williams developed into a key component of the side at Selhurst Park and picked up the club's Young Player of the Year award n 2012/13.
Injuries have thwarted his recent progress but he has impressed during several loan spells in the Championship.
And he has also forged a name for himself on the international stage, earning a maiden call-up to the Wales senior squad in 2013 before being selected in the squad for Euro 2016.
He signed a contract extension until 2019 during the summer but, with few first team chances in Frank de Boer's squad, Williams is now set for a switch to the Stadium of Light.
Where has he played?
Crystal Palace are Williams' only permanent employers thus far, but he has enjoyed no fewer than four loan spells away from London.
His first temporary switch came in 2014 when he joined Ipswich Town, initially on a one-month loan. Injuries meant he returned to Selhurst Park early but he was back at Portman Road in January and showed glimpses of his obvious talent - ending the season with two goals in 20 appearances.
The following season saw Williams spend time at both Nottingham Forest and MK Dons, where he made 10 and 13 appearances respectively but failed to score.
More injuries came in the way of a return to Ipswich last season, with Williams making only 8 appearances for the Tractor Boys.
The attacking midfielder has also earned international honours at U17. U19 and U21 level and has since gone on to make 17 appearances for the senior side.
What can we expect from him?
It's difficult to know - the attacking midfielder's struggles with injuries have masked his ability in recent years and he hasn't had an opportunity to show his worth.
But Sunderland will be getting a player with obvious ability, and one who will lay on plenty of chances for the likes of James Vaughan and Lewis Grabban.
If he is played in his natural number ten role, which is expected, then Williams could well be the driving force behind Sunderland's attacks, helping the side to transition from defence to attack swiftly.
He knows the Championship well and should be a key performer at this level.

How do you know they're ****? You'll only gave seen them play 3 minutes in the last year... Much like the rest of us!!!!! Fwiw I think Ridwell will be ok in the championship. Gibson I gave no idea about!! But all 4 of them are holders not attacking so will be a good signing if he's actually any good!!

You're welcome to think what you like I think they're ****e Especially Rodwell, you don't wait 3 seasons for good performance from a good player and still be waiting. A player can have the skill of messi, but play once a season i'm going to call them ****e, cause they're not fit for purpose.

RR: So, Jonny Williams. I have to admit that I don't know much about him really. What can you tell us Sunderland fans about what we can expect from him?
FYP: Jonny Williams started out in Palace's youth team, and graduated into the first team at the same time as Wilfried Zaha. They were both exciting prospects that Palace fans really felt would become integral parts in our squad. Williams's calmness on the ball, his vision and his attacking intentions made him a pleasure to watch - he looked like a player beyond his years.
You'll get a player who works tirelessly, is great on the ball, is always ready to receive it and looking for passes, and is positive in his approach both on and off the pitch. He's a lovely character anyway, but he's a popular player too. With a run of games, he'll make things happen.
RR: Why hasn't it quite worked out recently for him at your club?
FYP: His injury issues have been quite difficult for him to overcome. These haven't always been the same ones -- so it's not recurring injuries that have been problematic. But his size, and his willingness to run with the ball and take on opponents, makes him a very easy target.
After his trip to the Euros with Wales last year, Williams came back to Palace with the intention to push for first team football -- only to then get crunched with a horror tackle in the club's final pre-season fixture. The ankle injury he suffered took months to recover from.
RR: He's had a few loan spells with Championship clubs in recent times. What's the overall feeling about what he gained from spending time away from Palace?
FYP: His loan spells have been a bit hit and miss. Stints at Nottingham Forest and MK Dons didn't really work out. But Williams was received really well at Ipswich Town.
With the right set-up and support from the managers that sign him, he'll produce the kind of performances that will endear him to your fans.
RR: He's still very young - do you think that this loan spell will be with a view to move him on down the line, or do you hope he returns back to Palace one day as a more rounded, experienced player? I notice he's only just signed a contract extension in June.
FYP: In a dream scenario, Williams would help Sunderland to win promotion and then return to Palace to stake a real claim at first team football.
However, there is an overriding fear among Palace fans that the injury record -- and his loan spells -- might have seen to him having much hope of making an impact at the club.
That said, because he'd played so many games for the club at such a young age, it's often forgotten that he's just 23 years old!
RR: Some Sunderland supporters might meet this deal with trepidation - what would you say to anyone that isn't sure about how they should feel about our club signing Williams?
FYP: Ask Ipswich fans what they think of him and his ability. His popularity at Palace and Ipswich is for a good reason. With games under his belt he should be a great addition. He deserves success after his injury difficulties.
