I agree with this. At the same age Stevie was almost the finished article already and his future star status was obvious (barring serious injury). The only weakness in his game then was a tendency to dive in to reckless challenges which he learned to control better as he matured. I was impressed with Shelvey yesterday and it seems obvious that match time on loan has helped his understanding of the game enormously. I see a lot of potential in the lad and if he continues to improve we'll have a good player on our hands.
Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has set his sights on becoming a regular in their first team after impressing on his Barclays Premier League breakthrough against Aston Villa yesterday as his side won 2-0. Shelvey says: "The gaffer has put a lot of trust in me, and I thank him for that but I feel I've deserved the chance to start a Premier League game."
I have to be honset that when Shelvey first came onto the scene i thought this lad thinks he is the new Gerrard. He was trying shots from 30 yards out, attempting 50 yard cross field balls to players and flicking balls and trying the fancy dan stuff... But maybe the lad has grown up. Maybe the time at Blackpool has made him think about where he was going. He wasnt outstanding yesterday but he did all the things that he should and maybe with a little luck and vision could well have scored. A definite one for the future and im glad to see the lad learning the game... Now lets hope he can turn out to be the player we think we can see in him... Not the next Gerrard but the next Shelvey...
Charlton fan here in peace. Although it will always annoy me that we got what we think is nothing like enough money for Shelvey, I will always wish him well. He has an ability and a confidence that few others have at his age, and it's heartening to know that he is showing signs of maturing. I must admit I didn't expect him to feature in a Premier League starting line-up for a while, but he played well yesterday and I hope Dalglish gives him more opportunities. And his finishing is definitely a lot better than yesterday
