Liverpool FC have no plans to offer Glen Johnson a new contract this summer – but they aren’t preparing to sell the defender.

The England right-back is down to the final 12 months of the lucrative deal he penned back in 2011.

Boss Brendan Rodgers said in March that starting negotiations over an extension would be “a priority” during the close season but the ECHO understands that Liverpool are now in no rush to sort out his future.

The Reds are prepared to retain Johnson’s services for next season and run the risk of losing him on a free transfer in 2015. By then he will be nearly 31 and have little sell-on value anyway.

Johnson’s form was erratic for most of the campaign and he didn’t come close to justifying his £110,000 per week salary which makes him one of the club’s highest earners.

Anfield officials believe he has done little to merit the security of a new deal but they don’t intend to off-load him.

Selling Johnson could raise £3million to £4million but Liverpool believe having invested so much in him since his £18million switch from Portsmouth in 2009 they would be better off keeping him for 2014/15 rather than having to splash out on a replacement.

Rodgers will need greater strength in depth to cope with the added demands of Champions League football and knows Johnson’s experience could be important.

The Reds’ approach to Johnson is also influenced by the terms of the contract he penned when Damien Comolli was director of football in July 2011. There is a significant reduction in his basic wage during the final year of his deal.

There is a feeling inside Anfield that Johnson is better when he has something to fight for and the hope is that coming back in pre-season without a contract on the table should focus his mind.

Liverpool have been linked with a move for Manchester City right-back Micah Richards but he is not on the club’s summer wish list.

The Reds still hope to agree a deal with Southampton for midfielder Adam Lallana and Sevilla’s Alberto Moreno is their top left-back target.

Also on Rodgers’ shopping list is a commanding centre-back and another goalkeeper.

The manager believes the club’s return to Europe’s elite means they need a third senior shot-stopper to compete with Simon Mignolet and Brad Jones.

The Reds have been alerted to the availability of Swansea City keeper Michel Vorm and Rodgers is considering a move for the 30-year-old Dutchman.

Meanwhile, Lucas Leiva has distanced himself from reports linking him with a move to Inter Milan.

The Brazil midfielder’s future is uncertain as he is no longer a guaranteed starter at Anfield.

“I can say that at the moment I have received no offers,” he said.

“Liverpool have never contacted me regarding this possibility. I can’t say there is a chance of me going to Inter because I am under contract at Liverpool.”

No new contact but he will stay. He is seen to have no resale value and is worth more seeing out his contact.

Can see the sense in this, sort of, in an aggrieved way. Hopefull we'll buy someone else at RB and he'll be a decent squad player and have something to 'fight for' as if the PL title isn't ****ing enough for the waster... give him one more season then flog the dead weight.

I think that article suggests he'll be going this summer.

Saying he won't be going anywhere helps boost his sale value. There is no benefit in saying his contract won't be extended.

God, I hope we get rid of him this summer. Replace him Brendan, please.

What's the logic in keeping a **** player on such high wages? Because we spent £18m on him and want to get the most out of him. Why did we sell Carroll then? Just sell him BR, please.

I for one think that there's no grand conspiracy and Rodgers has said enough long enough to suggest that Johnson won't be sold unless an actual real offer turns in.... Ne me who'd want the guy????

The only benefit in him staying would be that he brings big game experience for the CL, especially after another WC. He also provides extra competition and squad depth, something we're obviously lacking. We still need to buy another full back, but if we sell we'd have to replace and then also buy an addition.

Yes his wages are huge but let's be honest, getting rid of him won't be easy so keep him for another year, to provide depth and let's be honest... he can't be any worse than this year surely? <whistle>

He's been the only player I've been consistently critical of all season so I won't shed a tear if he leaves.
However, I don't think we'd get a lot for him, and we do need to bolster the squad so if we can bring someone in to start before him, it might be reasonable to keep him on as competition/ backup.
I don't want another season of him as first choice RB though.

I think he's a decent player who always gives his all. One of the better players we have, he should score more goals tho

Sarcasm or severely deluded. His biggest problem is his work ethic, he is so lazy and just doesn't care.

I'm sorry but that's just not true in the slightest.

Exactly what I was gonna say. Patently a player who doesn't 'always give his all' as the article says with its mentioning that people inside the club think the same. Hopefully you're just taking the P

He's had a bad season and lost a yard since he came back from injury. Before that he was one of Liverpool's and England's top performers. Very sad to see his decline.

Some on here sound like Talksponk giving him 4/10 during the Euros when he was England's best defender.

He's had a poor 18 months IMO.
