Mate, the story I told about the youngun in Glasgow was in no way meant to be used as any form of excuse for owt. I's all available on Google if you want to read about it.

People can say things in the heat of the moment that they don't really mean. I have done it myself but had the balls to admit to it & apologize.

However, those that are racists & bigots are deplorable imo.

Hey Billy - I wasn't meaning that example... sorry if it came across that way. I was more thinking along the lines of stuff I hear spouted by some folks eg

"Well black folks are more racist than anyone so why should I stop calling the names when they do it?"

    and

"If I call a black guy a racist name I get done but if he calls me a racist name nothing happens"

No, it's me who should apologize marra. It didn't quite come out the way I meant it to.

When I lived in Glasgow there were a lot of lads who had mates on the other side just like I do.

Although they were mates they would call each other names like taig, hun, fenian, dirty orange bastard etc. They never took offence as they were mates.

On time a lot of songs got banned from pub juke boxes. The lads were talking about it in the bar one night & the general concensus was, they have their songs we have ours. Why can't they just leave us alone, it's nowt to do with anyone else.

I knew a bloke up there who was a Celtic STH, his best mate was in the local Orange Lodge. Something is only offensive if you're offended by it I guess.

Agree 100% and I think it's my right to be perfectly happy if my Canadian mates call me a Limey Bastard and not take offence but if some stranger in a bar calls me the same I think it's my right to be offended by it.

Well Limey isn't a race as I said above - but if a black guy was to use a racial epithet aginst me and I chose to complain the cops would be all over it... Canadian laws are at least as as strict as in the UK and the general public are more aware and hostile to raciast terms than in the UK, I find.

I know a fair few folks in the UK who would shy away from terms like '******' but happily use terms like 'Paki' or 'Chinkie'... all would be very uncommon in Canada - at least the parts of Canada I know.

I'm actually trying to think of a racist term of abuse against white people but I'm struggling... did anyone even use the word 'honkey' ouside of terrible 1970s sitcoms?

They have said on the radio that the offence Terry has been charged with carries a maximum sentence of a £2500 fine.

    I bet he's ****ting himself.
