Awful news. I was in hospital recently and one of the people in another bed knew John Hays and we were chatting about the virus and things. He said John was in tears when he realised he'd have to lay some staff off as he'd tried so hard to avoid it. Sounded like a thoroughly decent person who had made a massive success of his company and was still trying to run it the right way and take care of his staff. Said at the time that I'd make sure I booked my next holiday through them. RIP John, you sounded like a top bloke

Very sad news. Always seemed to care about his staff and the region. R.I.P.

Methven said Sunderland folk knew nowt about business.
Most people in most towns and cities up and down the country don't.
Nice to see the ones that do like John Hayes and Bob Murray don't forget where they come from and put something back with passion.

RIP John Hayes.

RIP John Hays - I can't imagine the stress he's been under this year taking on Thomas Cook stores just before covid.

I’ve not seen one bad word said about this feller. Rest in peace John
