His hands aren't tied, they offered him a contract that he knocked back and it was then retracted after all his bad mouthing the club in public.

He can't pretend to be the victim after everything he has spouted off in public and on Twitter.

Perhaps this was a final stand-off and Newcastle have contacted him with an offer? After seeing Barton play and how integral he's been over the past few games, perhaps Ashley has gave in now he knows that Barton is imminently trying to move away?

Highly unlikely of course, but a possibility nonetheless. Everything seemed wrapped up yesterday afternoon, but Warnock's comments and Barton's sudden silence is odd.

It was retracted before the bad mouthing actually. The retraction was what sparked his unprofessional comments.

Bad mouthing? You mean a set of rather bland truths that everyone knows but nobody else had the guts to come out with.

He won't stay where he's not wanted and I can't say I blame him. He will be a great asset for QPR or whichever club he ends up at.

I kinda understand that, the club have been good to him until recently. But its a brutal business as he has found out, and while he may wish to stay here, it would be a crazy career decision and not in keeping with the general way in football. I can't think of a player who has seen out the final year of his contract unless its for money. i.e. they have monster wages like Marcelino. Coem to think of it, even then the situation is unique because they've given him a free transfer. I don't think they could have made things more clear to Barton and fans alike.

We all knew this was happening, be it next summer or this. The only upsetting thing was he said he'd see out his contract with us, and all of a sudden his "hands are tied".

Heat of the moment in a battle of wills with Ashley though. Reality is that was never happening and couldn't ever happen. Career suicide on his part if he did.

Barton is cutting his nose off to spite his face by staying with us. He has been stubbornly staying put hoping to convince MA to give him a new contract. Let's face it that will never happen, that horse has well and truly bolted. It makes sense to him to move on and keep his career going somewhere else and he has nothing to gain by staying.

If he doesn't take the QPR offer my guess would be that he suspects other clubs are in for him and he wants to see if he has a better offer. I hope he goes now so that we can bring this sorry saga to a close and have some time to look for a replacement, which I think we need IMO.

I just wish he'd said from the outset, "the club dont want me so if I get another offer I'll leave, unfortunately", instead of all this "staying one more year", and the "pride of the B&W shirt".

I'm not too bothered if he stays or goes, I just want this all to be resolved now. If he stays we have a very decent player who not only gives his all on the pitch, is also a very talented. If he goes then we can finally put it all behind us and move on, hopefully bringing in a replacement in the process (wishful thinking methinks?).

What does irritate me is that he's going for a free, I never understood why the club decided to do that- maybe it was try and call Joey's bluff? By alerting other clubs to tempt him with others when he's always said how much he wants to stay at NUFC.

It's a shame it came to this, Joey is/was my favorite player for the Toon...

Agree with this, it's all the "Only leave for top 6 club or Champions League football" He's Tweeted false promises which has pissed me off.
He goes on about the board not be straight and telling the truth.

He says one thing and does the complete opposite, that or his agent has built his hopes up so much and QPR is the best of the lot. (No Offence to QPR)

I think the free thing just comes down to Ashley. Men of his standing and wealth can afford to write off money in anger. They might be tight as a fishes butthole most of the time, but when it suits they can be lavish in the extreme. (look at his roulette jaunts) I think its simply a case of Barton playing his hand and Ashley trumping him. Plus its plausible deniability in their eyes I'd imagine. They'll probably say "he had a year left, he could have stayed but he wanted to go" thus absolving themselves of any wrong doing in the eyes of the fans.
