On the fee, I think he's worth it. For a Welshman he plays like a Spaniard, we need someone like him to like up Gerrard and Lucas, and to spread the play in general.
I don't get the negativity from some people around this. He's a fine player who will get better and better. The only comparable midfielders in England are probably Scholes, Modric and Wilshere, and we won't be getting any of them, will we?
At the end of the day, if they are good enough it does not matter if they are from Spain, Ireland or Mars. You would not turn Gareth Bale down because he is not Spanish or Brazillian. Perhaps if he was called Allenhino it would be fine?
Because the same was said of Carroll, Henderson, even Adam. Potential is all well and good but we need to be buying players who, like Suarez, are at their peak and can really change our team. Will Allen change enough for us to justify £15m that could be spent elsewhere? We don't have an unlimited budget to waste this year
Exactly. If we were saying Allenquiz, Spanish 22 year old, currently at the Olympics with Spain, played last season for Rayo Vallenco, impressed, one of the top 5 passers in Europe... We'd all be drooling.
If he were called Alleninho we'd be paying half the price due to him not being British, so it would be fine
I agree we need one or two more signings. Be honest though, when Carroll and Adam signed did you ever believe they had the potential to become great signings? I'll be very happy with Allen and I think he'll add a lot to our side. We lost the ball far too easily last season once Lucas was injured, we won't now.
Yea, ask Madrid how much they want for Alonso or Ronaldo, think you will find it is a lot more than £15m. How much have Chelsea just forked out for there foreign signings?
Anyway, the story is being run by Goal.com. if we have learnt anything from the Gylfi saga, it should be that don't believe until it is signed and sealed.
Wo, let's be frank, Ronaldo, Alonso, Hazard etc are in a different league (mind the pun) compared to Allen, they command high transfer prices because they are fantastic players, not because they are foreign
Fair enough , just trying to prepare myself mentally for if and when it happens, so I can attempt to be positive and optimistic when he signs....
I'm with Baz and NI here, he is better than Henderson when we bought him and probably has more potential too. That price tag may buy a foreign winger with skill and looks good but may not fit the system in that position. The 2 assists doesn't tell the whole story, firstly it was at Swansea who weren't exactly scoring for fun and most of their goals were created very high up the pitch by one of the front 3.
Hazzard, an unproven youngster with a reputation for being a great talent, if not slightly lazy and immature. Joe Allen at 22 is rated as one of the best passers in Europe and a great engine. Ok so he is not an household name yet, but Liverpool can give him the platform to showcase his talent on a worldwide stage. Perhaps in five years he will be rated as the best midfielder in the country. you could say the same of Alonso before we signed him, or Ronaldo before he went to United.
We have made to many mistakes down the years. When Madrid wanted Alonso, they wanted shot of VDV, Sneider and Robben. We could have easily have got a few of them in on a swap basis. When we finished second Rafa wanted the likes of Silva, Alves, Villa and Aguero. The board failed to back him and we ended up having to sell to buy and lost ground on United. This is a chance to get it right and we can't miss out on Joe, if Rodgers wants him, the board has to deliver. We have the makings of an excellent team here. We could be the surprise package of next year.
I think Rodgers has shown with the whole Siggy thing that he won't be doing business unless he thinks the player is 100% worth what we would have to part with - so whatever he wants to spend to bring players in I will trust he is doing the right thing.
