"I don't want to waste another 400 feet of film discussing your program." "But, Brian, when you worked for us, you gave your views." "Yes, and I'm far more qualified than you." Absolutely superb! I have forgotten just how much I loved Cloughie.
McManaman on ESPN3 is dire--sad, because he was an excellent player. Listening to games he works is like being at the elbow of the dourest boor in Scotland.
I can read Spanish, but my understanding of spoken Spanish is hit and miss. Still, my two favorite calls of goals were both in Spanish. 1. Gio's goal against the US in the Gold Cup, to make it 4-2. It began with Chicharito Chicharito Chicharito, became ecstatic as Gio played cat and mouse with Howard, went completely over the top when he pulled the ball back from Howard for the second time, and, as the shot brushed the hair of a defender and went into the goal, ended in an echoing GOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLASOASOASOASOASOASO. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=6Roc2lf6Zek 2. The call by the Argentinian announcer on Maradona's second goal against England, beginning with "Genio" (genius) and ending with, I think "Ala cielo!" (Heavenly wing!) and including something like "Millions of Argentinians with tears of joy running down their cheeks."
Watching the game on Sunday I could'nt put my finger on what was wrong then it dawned on me , Childs is a Nob Beglin a bigger Nob all we needed was gray, Townsend and Wilkins to complete the set.
That oaf Childs after the Stevenage game, "so, a nil-nil draw by the same side that put 5 past Newcastle". You would think the main presenter would be aware of the teamsheet, and the hard to miss absentees. No surprise, its fairly typical of the Koala bear faced buffoon.
The lack of research is breath-taking, from some of these pundits. Roy Keane with his punditry at half time and full time, following our draw with Stevenage made me want to smash my TV.
My favourite pundit twat is Phil Thompson on skys soccer Saturday show....he I so pro Liverpool and so anti spurs it really makes me laugh. Plus he really is **** as a pundit.
I agree with previous comments asking why we need pundits and co-commentators. Commentators are OK for player identification and adding a bit of excitement to the game, but the hindsight analysis of the obvious is pathetic. One of the things that makes football interesting is the imperfections - if all teams performed according to how the analysist judged the game to be played, there would never be any goals scored as the defending would always be perfect, there would never be space for attacking players and defenders would always steer the attacker onto his weaker foot. There would never be any fouls as all takles would be perfectly timed and safe. Another point is about tactics - having played a bit of football myself - but never with a "manager" at the helm, how much influence does a manager have on the game, other than team selection and use of substitutes? I mean, when you play the game and partcularly at a high level, can't players work out what to do themselves - assuming the idea is to score goals and beat the opposition?
Liverpool FC - Top Trumps champions of the World. Except for Manchester United winning more League titles than they have Or for that matter Manchester United, Arsenal and Spurs winning more FA Cups than they have Come to think of it, Real Madrid and Milan have won more European Cups than they have But they do hold more League Cup wins than anybody else...
