    How so?

The man was an elected MP (East Hull).

How does that make him 'President Prescott'?

It doesn't. But if we had a Republic then we could end up with some deadbeat like him as a President after all the horse trading that goes on. Like France where they have a Prime Minister and a President. What a wonderful prospect, eh?

The Windsors, or if you prefer to call them by their German name, descend from Queen Victoria's husband. Queen Victoria herself was a Hanoverian, and her ancestor, George I was 'grafted' onto us by Parliament after they invited him to reign as a constitutional monarch in an effort to spare us of an absolute Catholic monarch who the Jacobites would have prepared. Queen Elizabeth II can trace her ancestry to practically all of the royal dynasties that have ruled (or reigned) over these isles since Anglo-Saxon times. She's a direct descendent of Alfred the Great, Cnut the Great and William the Conqueror. Her family only relinquished their German holdings and titles during the war, but she's as British as you and me.

Anyway, I don't see any effort by the British people to get rid of them, so what exactly is your point?

My point is that all you say is pointless. Where does their position come from?

(I'd believe in monarchy if I could get to be king....:bandit:)

Anyway, bograt - why are you so interested? We 'lost' the 26 counties....

    Not Jimmy Bullard again?

It is a weird thread though - I find myself in 100% agreement with Patty and Tickler.

Mummy got the lucrative Paddington Bear stuffed toy concession and sent him to Repton.

Mummy was a teacher and daddy was a travelling salesman. A lot less privileged than some of the right on types beloved by the lefties.

And Mummy didn't get the lucrative Paddington Bear concession. The following is copied from Wikipedia as I can't be arsed typing it all out. "Clarkson was born in Doncaster to travelling salesman Edward Grenville Clarkson and teacher Shirley Gabrielle Ward.[3] His parents, who ran a business selling tea cosies, put their son's name down in advance for private school with no idea how they were going to pay the fees, until at the last moment, when he was 13, they made two Paddington Bear stuffed toys for each of their children.[4] These proved so popular that they started selling them through the business with sufficient success to be able to pay the fees for Clarkson to attend Hill House School, Doncaster and later Repton School."
A less privileged upbringing than the likes of Blair, Milliband and half the Labour front benches. And George Orwell.

Why should privilege refer only to someone someone's upbringing?

The fact that he's punched someone on the job and hasn't been sacked yet shows he is privileged, regardless or whether he was or wasn't 45 years ago.
