I keep seeing this argument that goals against Ferriby and Winterton count for nothing but the same has to apply to the other strikers. Fryatt and McLean had just as much time to score in the same 2 games as Simpson did and whilst between them they got 3 they (typically) wasted a bucketload too and Fryatt looked like he was in a massive strop and couldn't be arsed. Simpson didn't just score goals but he looked really good aside from that too, and really up for it. Also the goals he scored were proper finishes, not little trickles across the floor like Fryatt always does but proper strikes in the corners. If we want to get promotion we need the players with this kind of quality in the team. Again, the same argument applies to the others. How often last season did Fryatt just disappear for months at a time and hardly even touch the ball? I agree with this last line. Pearson's signings were good overall but he got the two most important ones wrong. I thought when we first signed them that McLean and Fryatt sounded too similar but I gave him the benefit of the doubt and since then they have turned out exactly as I expected based on what the Leicester/Peterborough fans said about them. It's really easy to say his performances in pre-season don't count because it was too easy but if you say that you have to also expect the others to do well too. So why did Fryatt look slower than ever across the two games and why did he still not manage to score either of his one-on-ones over the two games? Also the ability to strike a ball cleanly is nothing to do with the opposition, Simpson has shown that he can strike hard through the ball like a proper striker with the power of McLean but on target, something I've literally never seen Fryatt do. I'm getting a bit carried away by this but anyone who posted on here last season will know I found the strikers very irritating with all the missed chances last season and I think along with signing someone like Proschwitz, the next best thing to do to get us converting those chances is playing someone else who has shown he can shoot, such as Simpson.
Much as it grieves me to agree with you I do. I know Fryatt was our top scorer last season, but he did miss a few sitters as well. His lack of a "strike" has always worried me a bit. Now it may be that with Proschwitz coming in he'll look much better, but that could also apply to Simpson. At this point I'd be inclined to leave it up to Steve Bruce to pick the side, after all, he is the Manager, sees the players more often then we do, and used to be a fair larker himself.
Its not them its the other arf's. Solution is simple, leave the nags where they are happy and flat share in the Hull area when club duties dictate. Problem solved.
Good start to pre season for him. Like I said before, get Jay firing and it will be like having a new signing. Scoring breeds confidence, be it against Man United or Winterton Rangers, so it can only be a good thing that we have a confident striker who is putting his chances away. Hopefully he continues his form against higher calibre opposition.
I would have the Same starting 11 as at Winterton for Grimsby Town game on friday. Lets see what they can do against a better class of team. We all know what the big guns can do. I want to see Jay Simpson and Nick Proschwitz as a pairing at some point soon.
I believe the reason why Simpson didnt get any starts after returning from Millwall was because he refused to play out of position. Barmby had promised him a fair shout but after he refused that was it. Mybe the change of management has driven him to try and give it a good go.
