The point is that you don't have to be amazing in training to be good competitively. Think of the mindset difference - messing about with the lads in training or trying to break down a Championship defense with 20,000 fans watching.
The point is jay Simpson is not Gary Lineker and to get in the team he is going to have to train well
I realise he's not Lineker but the point still remains - some players are just less enthusiastic in training - I am, and any coaches I've had have always known that. They only cared if I was doing **** in an actual match. And no, I'm not "comparing" Sunday league to the Championship, but for all we know we could have missed out on an extra 12-15 goals last season simply because Simpson wasn't bagging hattricks in training.
Just to clarify, i'm all for having him in the squad, I agree he could be a useful player. Hope Steve Bruce gets the best out of him
No, Im saying to the person who said Jay obviously wasnt performing in training that it isnt everything. Yes some degree of performance during the week should be considered but it's not the be all and end all. Our own manager said this week he has had some players who look world beating in training and then terrible on a Saturday and vice versa.
I think Simpson is way better than Mclean, but I think there maybe a slight tendency to get carried away with these things, he was poor at Millwall last season and getting four goals against non-league opposition doesn't suddenly make him a work beater. If he's up for staying, then I'm more than happy for him to be in the squad, but I certainly don't think he's the new messiah(or a very naughty boy).
I have always been a fan of Jay Simpson but let's see how he does against better teams in the upcoming friendlies and the Capital One Cup game against Rotherham
What I find difficult to understand is that, when Burnsy interviewed Barmby, about why Simpson was not featuring, Barmby said it was because Simpson fitted in Koren's position and Koren was playing too well to be replaced. At the time I found that a bit odd as I didn't see how Simpson, a striker, was ever going to replace Koren, a midfielder. Barmby then said he (Simpson) would have to bide his time. Then when Koren was injured there was still no sign of Simpson. There is no wonder he got pissed off, as would anybody else put in that position. In my opinion he has not had a fair crack of the whip since action man signed Fryatt and McLean.
I don't think he was poor, it looks like a deal would have been likely had the Arsenal sell on clause not have been an issue.
Is it just the training though or is it other reasons why he doesn't get picked, maybe its not that straightforward with him because surely he can't be that bad in training?
I always felt a little sorry for Simpson, He struggled when he first came but then hit a bit of form, Just in time for Fryatt and Mclean to come in and take his place. As has already been said I don't think the systems we have played have been kind to either Jay or Matty. But If Simpson's form continues then I'd happily keep him.
He was dropped by Millwall long before his loan expired, pop on the Millwall board and ask them what they thought of him, they were all offering to drive him back to Hull in January.
100% agree - 4 goals against non league opposition doesn't suddenly mean he is going to be a hit in the Championship. If he stays and plays well then fantastic, but the fact the 2 different City managers, plus the Millwall manager were hardly raving about him coupled with a pretty awful record over 2 seasons in the Championship including come dreadful misses for City don't fill me with confidence. I understand his attitude was terrible in training when he came back to City last season, which might be because he didn't want to come back or because he wasn't playing, but still you expect them to give their all in training. Like with many things, time will tell and he might just get a chance this season if my hunch about Fryatt going is right, we shall see.
Fans opinions aren't really indicative on what the manager wants though! http://www.southlondon-today.co.uk/sport.cfm?id=24944&headline=No Millwall approach for Jay Simpson
I like Simpson, but I've mentioned before, that without disrespecting the lower league sides, the games were against North Ferriby United and Winterton Rangers. He still needs to prove to me that he can now start to deliver in the Championship. I reckon he'll get a chance but if I was manager, I'd give him until January then maybe sell him if he fails to deliver.
If someone bids for him then we may let him go, regardless of pre season form. Maybe selling him in january is easier said than done. I would keep him over McLean as he could be a useful squad player if he has the right attitude
We were discussing if he was poor at Millwall or not last season, I think the fans opinions are the most indicative opinion were going to get.
