mmm, I'm in 2 minds whether to try and make this. I had a lot of time for Jay all through until that last season 09/10 when it was clear he only wanted to look forward to the World Cup. I met him a couple of weeks before the end of the season and talked to him and ........ He was just very shallow. My children were with me and recognised him, but realised the chat wasn't interesting. I remember commenting about it on the BBC 606 site at the time and actually very few people seemed interested. When I spoke to him I wanted to know what his thoughts were about his future and it was clear he thought he could do better. I didn't have a problem with him thinking he could do better than "lil ole Watford". I actually thought he would pick up a contract with a "middling Premier League club". I think Bolton were the highest regarded club who came in for him, but either he didn't fancy it or it wasn't a serious offer. He then went to the World Cup and I looked out for him and thought he did ok and that performance would help him secure a Premier League contract. The World Cup finished and very little happened, did Bolton offer him something or did Sheffield United offer him a trial (look what happened to Sheff U!!). He eventually signed for an MLS club and that is really it. His professional career isn't going to hit the heights in the USA is it? And that was that. Do I hear the Premier for the film is in Blackfriars on Thursday 14th July? Err should I go?????
i was thinking about it too, but i don't think i'm going to make it. good to hear that about him...it kind of confirms how i feel about him...shame though, he seems to have slipped in the minds and hearts of Watford fans, and i'm not really sure why...
If I lived nearer, think I would probably go. As much as we did a lot for him, he was a very good player for us also, and I think his is an interesting story - almost like a real life "Goal" story (Not that I have seen them, or intend to). I think how he has risen is an inspiration to a lot of budding youngsters who weren't picked up by a club at a young age!
It's not so much a "premiere", more a screening as part of the fundraising process I think. Nonetheless, I will be there this evening.
Most enjoyable. All us Watford supporters understood it was a rags to riches story but I had no idea how low he was when we picked him up. Not a bad documentary and shows Watford in a pretty good light as well, also had some classic Americanisms which is always entertaining!
i vaguely remember some of the stories about how poor he was when we picked him up. There was a documentary on the tv if i remember rightly, just after he left us when he was still in Camden. Sounds good then, and worth a view...
