Some people are ambitious and it suits them, but there has been too much pressure in recent years on everyone to achieve their highest possible level. This can result in promotion to your point of incompetence. This doesn't suit everyone. As the saying goes...do what you love and you'll never work again. The problem can be finding that job...but it isn't necessarily the one with the most responsibility or earning the most money. I was married to an ambitious man (with traits I didn't find that attractive)....even though I had a small child, his move to a woman who matched him for ambition and social climbing turned out to be the best thing that happened to me. I was okay for money as I am not greedy and I can do my own thing. Finding yourself can be the hardest but most rewarding task.

Once again, good advice from the wise. You younger posters really ought to be writing this stuff down and referring to it on an occasional basis, not skipping over it because it runs to half a dozen sentences. :)

That's interesting Fran. I've never let ambition step across the family. I have let pressure on me affect the family (in a minor way - grumpy old git way) and I am assessing where I am now. I have always stretched myself in terms of work effort, but never to the point of too much time away from the family. More and more I question the balance of financial reward v strain and stress to get it.

Hope I'm not getting old and sensible.
 
Hate using such terms, but it is all about life balance and recognising who you are. There will be some people who like to strive and achieve the top...luckily for us, as the world needs achievers, but that may not be you. I would also say to youngsters that there can be other routes to getting there...too many parents think that you have to do your exams at fixed times in your life, but it is never too late. My nephew had problems with depression and left school...he is now just finishing a degree at 28 after returning to education as an adult.

I thought I would leave it a few days until all the official news was out about my return to training.

I am so happy to have signed a new four-year contract with Saints and whilst there was so much speculation about "will he... won't he" then to be fair it was other people talking and not me.

A new contract wasn't such a priority for me, but getting fit was. That said now it's signed I couldn't be happier.

Commitment works both ways and it’s been great to know that Southampton has given me pretty much unconditional support during this very difficult period.

Whilst all the rumours and speculation surrounding my future has been flattering it has never changed my resolve and my priority which has been to get fit and get ready for a return to the Number 9 shirt at Saints, playing in the Premiership and to begin to make my way back into the England set-up.

I’ve kept my own counsel as have my management team who have now taken on the brilliant guise of ‘Team Rodriguez’ and I'll now let my football do the talking and with luck that might happen sooner than later.

The support of Southampton FC and the physio team in particular has been second-to-none, and I thank them for everything in the past year or so.

Likewise my family and friends who have always been there for me… especially my fiancé.

It’s been a great season for Saints. Let’s hope for more of the same and more in 2015/16 and with luck a few trips to Europe!

Pleased he is staying...the real reward will be if he can play as well as he did. Good luck to him if he plays on Sunday and for his wedding which is coming up.

Indeed. In the face of no news, people will simply make it up as it suits them.
 
A fan told me recently that Jay's hairdresser (presumably the same one who said Lovren was leaving) told her a while ago that Jay was staying. Perhaps we should consult hairdressers rather than the media for information. :)
