Not how I read it, he wants Stewart to stay, so he is applying pressure. Sunderland should at least match what other Championship clubs will pay.
He is clearly talking about the future path the club needs to take in order to pay the wages. He goes as far to clarify that we’ve just come up from League one. You won’t pressure people by giving them mitigating circumstances or a get out clause.

TONY Mowbray has urged Ross Stewart to "grow with Sunderland" and says while the Black Cats might not be able to match the salaries of some Championship clubs now, they will be able to in the future if they continue to progress on the pitch.

Mowbray says he believes Sunderland are on the right path to "satisfying Stewart's needs" but for now, with the striker's long-term future still uncertain, the head coach admits he needs to "trust the men in suits".

Stewart has 18 months left on his current contract but with the club and player so far unable to agree terms on long-term deal, the speculation surrounding the striker's future won't go away.

Mowbray said: “I will only be confident when he puts pen to paper and we are announcing he has signed a new deal. I don’t what to delve into it too much. What I do know is he is training really well, is in a positive frame of mind, he has a voice and an opinion on the training ground.

"He is engaged with our football team and our football club. That is what I see every day out there. He wants us to win and do well. Beyond that, I cannot really comment because it is not my job. I just want him to enjoy his football and score goals and win.

"We all hope that we can find an answer what keeps Ross happy and make him feel a very, very important player for this football club. And when we get to the point where we grow the team to a point where we can satisfy his needs, if that makes sense.

"The context is we did come out of League One with League One salary levels. Everything about the club had to be managed prudently. How quickly can you jump up to being a top team who can pay him ridiculous money? We are not there yet. We have to grow it and I just hope he wants to be part of the journey.

"And when we are paying top wages because we are a massive football club who should be able to do that, he knows it is coming but we have to grow the team to get there. At the moment, there is a lot of clubs way further on than we are salary wise.”

Mowbray added: “You have to trust the people sometimes, the ownership, the board, the executives, the men in suits.

“Those of us in the tracksuits, we just work with the players, trying to inspire young guys to play and be the best version of themselves. I think supporters just want a winning team but they are realistic enough to know that we have come from League One and we are competing. As long as they see a team fighting for every point, I hope they will stay with us."

The bit I found interesting is that this is the first time that it's been said that he has 18 months left rather than stating that the extra year CAN be activated if required.

TM as a football manager who lives and dies by results. Stewart is obviously a crucial factor in getting results.

Sunderland as he mentions is a 'big' club and he imho is impling we should at least match other championship wages.

The implication also for me at least is, if a Premiership club pays us a big fee for him and gives him big wages... fair enough.

We should not be allowing a competitor in our division to take our best asset.
You are basically saying if we get promoted to the premiership by the play offs and we are doing quite well we should match the higher payers in that league if one of them wants one of our players.

Basically what money that comes into the club, has to go out as player wages,
perhaps augmented by owners.

Yes then recoup by buying cheap and selling dear.

In the championship we cannot lose our best player to a rival its nuts!

I think he’s actually saying he believes, sooner rather than later, we will be able to match upper championship wages but accepts that as a newly promoted side we’re not there yet. It’s a “ don’t go, have some jam now but even more jam soon” plea.

Not sure really what you mean?

Summary of Chris Rigg from the Athletic. There isn't really anything new. His family are Newcastle fans and we are trying to convince him he should stay anyway.

  • Any player can choose to leave their academy when they reach the end of the under 16 bracket, which Rigg does this summer. We would still be entitled to compensation, but he can just choose to leave. (I must admit I'm not sure how this differs even if he chooses to stay, as he still can't sign a pro contract until he's 17 anyway)
  • He only had the "right" to leave and move to another club at the end of Under 12s, Under 14s and Under 16s age groups. Therefore this summer will be first opportunity to move since he started getting all this recognition.
  • He's had a sponsorship deal with Adidas since he was 14
  • Compensation is likely to be at least £1m, whenever he does leave

The only thing that worries me is the 2nd bullet. Previously I'd thought if his parents were that desperate to get him out, he'd have been gone by now. But it turns out they're literally not been able to get him out, even if they had tried.

So it COULD be that he's already verbally agreed to go somewhere else and they're just waiting for the summer.

From what I can remember, KLD has said, quite unequivocally, that the club will have to be essentially self funding. He has never resiled from that position as far as I know.

So that means we can pay what we can pay, and that's it. It might mean we can't keep players sometimes, especially to teams who are using external funding. Fulham, for instance have been reported as paying Mitrovic £110k a week LAST season. An extreme case but there is a lot of money floating around at the top end of the Championship, usually recently relegated clubs. We will be paying nowhere near what say, McBurnie at Sheff Utd gets. Or others there or at Watford, Burnley Norwich or West Brom.

I don't mind this at all. It's how a club should be ran IMO, though the sustainability rules appear opaque and casually enforced.

What gets me about the Chris rigg situation, and it’s much more aggressive across the road than here, is if it was my son, and I’m as rabid a Sunderland fan as it gets, and the scum came a knocking with life changing money and maybe opportunities, I’d carry him there wearing his dirty kit, and most parents would do the same, always do what’s best for your kids and I wouldn’t expect to be slagged off for it by any reasonable person. So why constantly bring his family’s allegiances into it, the bairn and his parents will try to secure his future, wherever that is, and if we want to keep him then we need to match that opportunity.

I think there's a lot to consider. He'd be nowhere near the first team there - they're in the bringing in big players phase, so it could be years until he even gets on the bench.
Here, he can develop as fast as he likes. He's already on the fringes of the first team. Plenty of players have moved too early and their talent has been wasted. The only thing they've got to show for their career is money.

big story on Chris Rigg from athletic

You must log in or register to see media

I will read and summarise for people without the athletic

It is what it is. We are showing him our hand and it's up to him after that. He's clearly a huge talent and it would be fantastic if we could keep hold of him, but it will only be temporary - it's a matter of when he leaves rather than if.

It appears that it's still up in the air. A lot of suggestion that he's on the verge of a new deal but it seems like it's not yet resolved. We're not breaking our structure for him. Mowbray gently trying to apply some pressure and they're all asking Stewart to trust the club that we'll look after him. I tend to think that the club will do that, but it's not my career and future on the line.
