He's had off the field problems IIRC and he's ended up being a bit of a journeyman. Seems as though they are signing him on reputation, rather than ability
This would really test the family/player and agent. As good as he might end up being, he has a far better pathway to 1st team football here. If he goes to the mags, he will be swallowed up in their u23s and never seen again.
Do the family want what is best for him, or do they want what is best for them? Big signing on fee, the fame and infamy of signing for his/his Dad's "boyhood club" etc etc or do they want to give their son the best chance of making a career?
A signing Martin Bain would have endorsed if ever I’ve seen one
If he's a Newcastle supporter and wants to play for his/his dads club then I have no problem. If its so inevitable him going to the town at some point maybe Newcastle might just bide their time, let him develop at Sunderland where his development will probably be better than it would be at NUFC then buy him later when its easier to gauge his ability (money is no object to them after all). We basically have him on what is almost a mid/long term loan until Newcastle call him back with a decent bid if they want to? Everyones a winner! Maybe Newcastle might do that rather than risk his long term development being swamped and constantly blocked by multi million pound mercenaries?
Burnley’s 2nd - benson cross that missed everyone and Patterson watched it in.
Blackburn’s 2nd at ewood park - free kick on the edge of the box that’s crossed in, missed everyone and Patterson watched it in, again.
Wykes goal for Wigan at the SoL, O’nein was running back onto the line and somehow the ball managed to squeeze between the pair of them because instead of diving to his right he just flopped to the floor and threw an arm out.
Watford’s first, played straight across him from the byline, throws a hand at it but it goes straight beyond him to allow an open goal.
Watford’s 2nd - headed back across the box, probably 3 yards out amongst a group of players and he doesn’t come for it. O’nein heads into his own goal.
QPR’s 2nd - opting the punch the ball out the first time with only O’nein under the ball, running back to his goal line then for some reason choosing to rush out even though he’s nowhere near where the ball was projected and getting lobbed by their goalkeepers header.
Bristol City’s 2nd - just fell over and watched it trickle in?
Sheff United’s 1st - corner comes in and lands on their head of the defender no more than 3 yards away from Patterson, glued to his line.
Wigan - at the DW, palms a long range effort straight back into the middle of the box for Wigan player to smash in.

You are being very harsh, especially with Wyke's goal. He was unmarked, centre of the goal and curled it into the far corner
Very harsh on some of these like. None of these were howlers either, id say other than the wigan one the other week. Not sure what point you are trying to make? Are you saying that patterson is useless and we need better?
Every keeper in the championship will make mistakes or poor decisions, thats why they are playing at this level. What i would say is patterson has got better n better as the season has gone on. I watch a lot of football and for me hes one of the most exciting GKs in the football league and im so proud that hes a local lad as well.
Hes ranked in the top 10 GKs in the championship on wyscout n instat, who use a lot of data to comply their top 10 lists. Very exciting prospect
1. Hmm, the point you make is what is best for the lad?
2. Parents/family/agent will want to cash in.
3. The Dad, if he is an out and out stunk, will want his son to play for the beheaders.
Presumably as soon as we can legally we can cough up some cash, or promise to do so. Then it could all resolve as to how much a mag is the lad.
For instance my father supported the mags and after some tiff or other (can’t remember what now) I told him I supported Sunderland, my two younger brothers followed me!
I agree staying with us, may be best for the development of his football career. But what will be, will be.

There are a lot of Patterson haters, I guess they will never change their mind. I just hope he realises there are also a lot of fans who support him.
Absolutely not, I like Patterson and I think he’ll be a great keeper. He’s still young and has 15+ years left in the game, so for where he is now that’s brilliant. As I mentioned earlier on the thread, Nick Pope was still playing L2 football at 25/26. I’m just not going to pretend I’m oblivious to poor decisions/mistakes that have cost us goals because someone replied to my comment with a sarcy knobhead response trying to call me out
I’d say other than the Wigan one they aren’t really harsh, because it’s the same things cropping up. How many times have you been at the match and watched a corner come in right on top of the keeper and it’s not been dealt with and we’ve not conceded through sheer desperate defending and a little bit of luck? If we want to improve as a team these things need nipping in the bud.
I’m not sure what stats you’re looking at but on footystats which holds a huge database of any amounts of important and not so important stats, he’s not top 10. And for save %age he’s 19th of all championship keepers who’ve played 10 or more games.

Yes he needs to command his area more but hes improving in that area all the time. Most championship keepers are the same though.

If he wasn't making some mistakes at his age he wouldn't be our keeper any more and would be playing in the premier league.
They've had him at the Sunderland Academy rather than at Newcastle's since he was 8 so I think that goes someway to answering your last question. They've clearly got their lad's best interests at heart over and beyond their own allegiances.
I'm not sure why so many people (not you) are insistent on casting aspersions over his family when all precedent shows that they're clearly not the SAFC hating, staunch Mags that people suggest.
