Like Stewart has said
It’s a business
We shall see where he ends up I’m sure he can perform at a higher standard

Just one of those situations where you can’t blame the player one bit for wanting to maximise his earnings, and at the same time I completely understand why we can’t pay him what he’s worth, and also understand why that means we HAVE to try to sell him now rather than risk losing out even more.

If he is set on leaving I think we will do really well to achieve £10m for him. Clearly he’s “worth” a lot more than that but due to the injury, which has ****ed us and him, I think the amount teams will be willing to pay this window literally dropped a few millions.

The next best strategy for us would be to turn down offers of £5m or so and take a huge gamble on him scoring a **** load for the rest of the season and becoming so in demand that there’s an auction for him in the summer, even if he only has a year left we might end up finding teams willing to pay more then than they are now. Can’t see it ever going above £10m tho with his current contract situation.

I can see both sides of the Stewart argument, I can’t blame him but I’m not sure who’s radar he was on when we bought him. On the flip side the club has to match the players ambition too, I’m not sure we are at that point yet.

I will add for those that think we should just pay Stewart the premier league wage he wants… that it’s not just Stewart.

Let’s say Everton can offer him £30k per week.

and let’s say we COULD match it. (It’s almost certain we can’t).

and that point we aren’t just stretching for Stewart.

Because what happens next is Pritchard’s wage demands suddenly go up £10k per week. So do Neil’s. So do Clarke’s.

And then every agent of every player we try to sign knows that we’ve offered Stewart big bucks and suddenly we are pricing ourselves out of signings.

It’s why our wage ceiling isn’t something that should just be broken to keep a player. The ceiling should be reassessed continuously as our financial situation improves, but should only ever be raised to a level we are willing to pay several players.

Seems very much like it's going to be quality over quantity so yeah could well be an exciting one.

Took a while to get to this position but I think that's the way the club will.be in transfer market from now on. Potential quality maybe over proven quality but still better than the scatter gun approach of old.

I'm sure some seasons it the brief 'whoever is for sale'

That is our problem in a nutshell, but its £24000 p week we can't get anywhere near that.
Pritch was on £5000 p week now but IMHO he's offski

Sorry Bob, but Pritchard was on more than that in league 1!
I must admit my eyebrows shot up when I read that. Seems low for a player like him. I assume Clarke and Baath are on bigger basics than that too, bearing in mind where they came from. Would be surprised if Roberts and Evans werent drawing a bigger amount as well. Could be well wide of the mark of course.

Absolutely. People think we are paying buttons etc, if Ross Stewart wanted 24k per week the club would pay it. Jack Clarke signed for Spurs for 10m, imagine what kind of contract he would have been on at Spurs, then for us to sign him permanently.

We wouldn't pay £24k per week. Not yet. Maybe a few seasons in to the championship as our income from transfers etc rises

How much you think Defoe would have been with us last year in league 1 when we signed him?

Low enough that he thought retiring and ripping up that contract was worth doing

He wasn't going to do that if we were paying him bucketloads. It was clearly a move about playing time (which he didnt get) rather than money
