Eriksen's price was skewed because he only had 12 months left on his contract. Plus as you've pointed out yourself we've had trouble trying to beat Spurs to certain players so why would this be any different? So we are forced to take punts on players that aren't being looked at by other top teams like Aspas, Coutinho, Alberto, Sturridge, Moses, Ilori etc.

my point here is this.

spurs bought him late august, they never even showed the slightest interest unitl then. Had we... rather than waste our time with aspas.. done out and really tried to get eirksen in may/june maybe we would have got him.

obviouly we did not.

it is this that makes we weep salt tears for i am convinced we missed a true bargain and a world class talent for a small fee.

If we wanted Eriksen, we would have got him IMO. Rodgers wanted a goal scoring midfielder hence he targeted Mkhitarayan and Costa (striker/support striker).

Eriksen was inconsistent for Ajax and didn't score many goals so I can understand the logic for not going for him - but the price difference between Alberto and Eriksen is relatively small so it doesn't make sense.

Never mind.

As good as Mata is - £30m is a lot and what I like about our new transfer policy is that we won't spend more on a player than what he is worth. You can argue that Mata is worth that much but I feel we can the next Mata at better value.

We spent £20-25m on the likes of Suarez and Torres, £10m on Alonso, £18m on Mascherano etc etc. This is great value and all of these players were very good and we then turned them world class.

I rather we continue down this route rather than buying already established world class players and crazy prices.

Re. Fergie's assessment that we're 8 players away - he's not far off. We are two top class central midfielders away from having a strong first 11. Then I suppose the other 6 would be solid squad players i.e right back, number 10, striker, keeper ...

dare i say it but 2004 is not today.... we did pay 11mil for alonso. and at the time that was a big but not huge fee. we are today in 2013 calling 11mil a tiny fee.

The context has changed, 20 mil for torres in 2007/08 was a huge fee. it was 23 to 27mil BTW... now... well soldado costs the same and he's not anywhere near the same level of player (IMO) suarez was 23 mil, that was considered a bargain before his antics. could have been 35mil!

My point i suppose is that mascherano at 18 was all his money and what we are looking for is players costing half their value so we can sell on. 7mil for aspas? I think palace can afford that... the real deal breaker is the wages. 20k for aspas.

If we buy mata for 30mil say... it'll never happen but say it did, 30l.. add 150k per week wages and singing on fee... now compare to eriksen at 12 mil and probably quite a reaosnbale wage in our price bracket.

Liverpool is thinking to Porto's Fernando, free contract on june. There are Everton, Monaco, M. United. But he prefers high salary #LFC

Welp, that is him to Monaco then!

With regards to possibly going to Monaco, there may be a new 75% tax rate ... which could deter footballers from playing in France. Could work in our favour.

It could but the players are going on strike in November and knowing the money Monaco have, they will just pay way way overexuburant wages to get them.

Since Monaco are taking this to court, and potentially they could take it to the EU commission, I can't see this effecting anything in the short term...

IF IF IF we are still in this position in January...... do you think FSG will offer to get some more quality in to ensure CL? If so, who do you think and position....

We've all said and I think BR knows that we need a midfielder and 1 more creative player. Look at the players we were after in the summer, Costa, Henri Ryan, Willian - that's the type of player we'll target as we didn't get anyone like that after missing out on those 3.

I think it'll be an interesting one with Suarez, no doubt someone will bid but if we're still in with a serious chance of top 4 and who knows, a slim chance of fighting for the title we must be strong and refuse any offer! If we then get CL football in the summer and a Bale like offer comes in then we should take it and re-invest like Spurs have done.

The way things are panning out at Chelsea.... it would take a big bid ( at least 30) and doubt Mourinho would sell BUT....... Mata would be awesome for us, can play wide, can play the no. 10, gets goals and assists. Mata, Coutinho, Suarez, Sturridge???? <ok>

Highly doubt it but man it would be awesome!

He can replace Suarez and we revert back to a 4-3-3. :bandit:

Strong rumours that we're working on a big deal in January. One name that is being mentioned is Pastore - he's been scouted and LFC have made initial contact a couple of months back.

Name: Kostas Mitroglou
Date of birth: 12/03/88
Born: Greece
Club: Olympiakos
Position: Striker
International: 26 Greece caps and five goals (correct as of 28 October 2013)

What's the latest?
Premier League duo Arsenal and Liverpool as well as Champions League runners-up Dortmund are the three clubs rumoured to chasing powerful Greek striker Kostas Mitroglou, who would reportedly attract a fee of at least £7m. He's in prolific form for Olympiakos and, with Arsenal said to be keen on back-up for Olivier Giroud, while the Germans are looking to replace Bayern-bound Robert Lewandowski, Mitroglou's attracting attention across Europe.

He will be off to Dortmund then

Heard that Dortmund might be offering Lewandowski to foreign clubs for as little as £7m in January in an attempt to stop him going to Bayern for free in the summer.

Can see their thinking but he'll probably just reject any move during the winter. Would be a steal for any of the English clubs to get him for that though

Interesting. Would anyone take him ahead of Sturridge? Not saying we'd get him or they are of equal ability, just thinking of the SAS partnership.

For £7m definitely! Wouldn't want him to replace any of Suarez or Sturridge, but he could take one of Aspas/Borini's place in the team.

Obviously if Suarez leaves and we got him (esp for that price) then it would some what soften the blow.
