Luuk de Jong: Newcastle target travelling to club for medical

Borussia Monchengladbach striker Luuk de Jong is travelling to Newcastle for a medical and is expected to join the club on an initial loan deal.

i'm unconvinced by him as a holding midfielder too.

the point is that he'd be pinned in a back 3 line so he can't go wandering. the idea is to stop him trying and failing to shuffle one side and the other in front of a back 4 then ball watching and losing guys.

when we have the ball our other cbs go wider and he sits as libero and playmaker.

then the full backs SHOULD have no issue getting out and blocking a cross cos theirs an extra CB to come over and cover if they get beaten by the man.

finally it hinges on Coutinho making the third man in midfield genuinely.

He's no CB. Never will be. If BR were to roll that system out, Agger would be a shoe in for that role. I still don't like that formation in the modern game. He'll do a job, no question and if he has legs around him, he'll do ok....but I prefer all of my midfielders to be equally mobile. Sadly, his days are numbered from here on in.

Mood swings, a terrible thing, one minute I'm thinking without a signing or two, we're doomed, other times (most of the time that is..) I want the right person(s) bought at the right price and to continue down the path of being self sufficient..
Right now, I'm Switzerland...

yes he should be you are right. it is just a crazy theory of what to do with gerrard... he's tall and could play it but i reckon he would be a bit of a ball awtcher.

the alternative view i had was as striker/target man type cos shringham was as slow as... could gerrard hold it up?

you've issued assault rifles and mined all bridges then?

well here's a controversial view

1996.... england... paul ince.

Try this one on for size

.................Mingolet
.........Skertl Gerrard Sahko
Johnson.......................Enrique
.........Henderson....X (allen)
................coutinho
........suarez........Sturridge

Make it a genuine 3-5-2 with gerrard as sweeper. make those full backs not drop into a 5 automatically but push to close down further up. hell call it 3-4-3 in attack

What's next? Gerrard in goal?

If we play three in the center with Gerrard/Hendo/Allen, Gerrards role as DM is basically halved with Allen. He should be able to hack it better then when alone. Problem is we're sacrificing creativity in playing that trio.

You know, I'd prefer to see him in an attacking midfield role. His vision is still world class, his range of passing fantastic, he can still find space, that doesn't necessarily mean he needs legs...and he can finish.....the one thing our current midfield are unable to do. Problem is with the pressing required in that role, he'd only last a half....maybe 60-65 minutes but I'd take that right now. <ok>

4-2-3-1

back four from whoever isn't injured!

Hendo - Allen

Gerrard/Sterling - Coutinho - Suarez/Sturridge

Suarez/Sturridge

i did call it crazy but it was based on some things others have done
