Spanish football expert Andy West tells BBC Sport: "There's been little to report today in Spain, but one interesting piece of news is Athletic Bilbao's admission that contract talks have broken down with 27-year-old defender Fernando Amorebieta. The central defender is highly rated and the fact that he'll be available for nothing in the summer will put plenty of Premier League clubs on alert.
It's a shout this!!!! Prob not for the summer though, would take this in a heartbeat. "Kurt Zouma from Saint - Etienne to Liverpool for £5m plus looking at Patrick Herrmann from Borussia Monchengladbach."
i think you need to not look at it like those players are gone off now. jus tthink like this Reina Arbeloa carra hyppia risse alonso mascherano Kuyt Gerrard Benayoun Torres Sold alonso with the crazy intent of getting barry. never replaced... bought aquilani which wasted 20mil of the fee we got Sold masch reluctantly and replaced with lucas... never replaced lucas as "reserve" bought poulsen Saw gerrard waste away under a groin injury that was chronic BOught and sold keane wasting that 20mil by first giving him back to spuds for 12mil then spent that 12mil on crap Sold torres for 50mil and bought carroll for 35mil.. total waste. Let kuyt go after he ran out of legs which is fair but bought borini for 11mil and downing for 20mil to replace him??? I mean whether or not over 5 years those players who left are any good now bu tthe fact is each and every time we were faced with someone going we bought terribly.. and i mean terribly yet.... amazingly... reina remains (rafa) johnson remains (rafa) Skertl remains (rafa) Agger remains (rafa Enrique might be vital in the future (kenny) Lucas developed (rafa) Gerrard is back to some extent Suarez was bought and is finally delivering after realising biting and winding up french scum isn't worth it (kenny) Henderson might come good (kenny) Sterling is coming through (rafa) Sturridge looks like he;s got something (rodgers) So amazingly somehow despite it all theres a side there that could and should do much better... would mascherano improve us... god anyone with a brain seems to be better than allen who's lost all field sense and even ability to make a pass so sure.... would alonso improve us sure! but you know what... a bit of backbone would improve us more.... and frnakly while rodgers might talk to it just who's eye did he nearly take out v oldham at half time.. doubt he's got the ruthlessness to really kick ass and get it donw. sure he might have told downing "something" and sure he might have finally got carroll out but he half assed both hasn't he? Downing is a rubbish player who's done ok v lesser prem sides but are we going to keep the guy??? he played carroll and talked nicely nicely when in fact if he really didn't like him he should have just cut him off. We'll see but i've seen for MANY years under many managers a lack of real grit and backbone thats really required to deliver results.
Everton apparently looking to buy Negredo from Seville. £13mil release clause but hoping to pick up for cheaper due to Seville's financial problems. Would be a good signing for them, apart from Jelavic they've not had a good striker in a long time. Jelavic seems to have gone off the boil recently as well. If he was to come and settle you'd fancy them to pick up 4th.
[ I think Negredo is out of our league (and yours), will be surprised if he leaves for someone who isn't in champions league.
not always about the CL shogs. Luis left CL for us, think as long as the club can show they are going in the right direction and ambitious the player could be tempted, and both of us are showing that to a degree, so possible. obviously if one of the top clubs came in for him then we lose lol don't think we are getting any more in, but possible you could tempt him, just hope you don't. (would wages be an issue for you though?)
In the January window, this sort of comment irritates me. A lot of teams are out of the CL already (Chelsea & Man City for example) but I don't think Negredo would turn either of them down because they don't have CL football. Everton are in a very good position to qualify for next year's competition and Negredo should look at the opportunity to help to club achieve that goal. Surely being part of the reason they have CL football would be more satisfying than rocking up to join in? This does bug my all round to a lesser degree, when talking about potential signings for ourselves. You often see the 'we can't offer CL football' line but, IMO, we can offer it as much as Tottenham and Arsenal because signing that particular player will be improving the side and the aim is to get back in the top four. We can't guarantee qualification but nor can the others, Arsenal have the record to back the argument though.
I agree with your argument to some extent but I don't think it applies to Liverpool. Yes - players want to play in the Champions League and in some cases, some players will join clubs who aren't in it but are challenging for it. We've been in decline for the past 3 years and we're currently 7 points off CL. There are other teams that are closer to qualifiying for the CL than Liverpool which is why we would struggle competing for said players. This is why I believe winning the Europa League and finishing top 6 is crucial because it shows real evidence that we are progressing.
You are right, we are a long way off at the minute but then, I did say to a lesser degree too. What I mean regarding Liverpool is that we are buying that player to help to club try and achieve that goal so we should sell the move to the player it that way..."we've not had CL football for a couple of seasons but we are an ambitious club and we hope you can help us achieve the first step of that ambition in getting CL football back." Every team is made up of eleven players, one or two quality additions can make a massive difference as long as they can stay fit.
Fair point but trying to attract the older and more experienced players may prove difficult because they don't have a lot of time left in their career e.g. Torres left when he was around 27 (I think) and he didn't want waste anymore time not being in the CL. But ... I presume you were alluding to the fact we should be targeting the 23/24 year olds who are still relatively young and hungry (Suarez, Torres at the time they signed). These are players who were highly regarded but not deemed world class before they came to Liverpool so they weren't courted by the likes of Barca, Real etc. These are definitely the players we should be looking at.
I was, got to fit in with FSG's policies but we need to attract better quality players that would have an immediate impact. IMO, we don't need expereince, we have plenty of players that are 26+ in the squad.
Yes we do but I think the majority are the back or in deep roles. Only Gerrard, Downing and Suarez are experienced - Gerrard plays quite deep so we lose that attacking experience, Downing is just useless, and Suarez is still only 26 and is relatively young. Sturridge, Sterling, Suarez, Borini are good players but do make the wrong decisions quite often, and this is an area where really need to imrpove. Central midfield needs some experience and composure as well. Also, when I say experience, I don't neccesarily mean age wise. We bought players like suarez and Torres young but they were playing for big teams and carrying them.
Fair point, just assumed you meant older players with the presumption you made... Guess we're thinking along the same lines here then. Young but experienced quality players such as a Eriksen or Isco (examples only).
if you had said £5 mill might have been believable. hope we don't get lumbered with him again in the Summer.
