Mick, you are following the words of your ancestors and I respect that, your choice in life, when you lose that you lose the lot..

There's a couple of Poppies sitting in my house right now which the kids got in school (and my missus grew up in Germany while her parents worked for the British army) so I genuinely have no problem with people contributing to the charity or showing respect for their war dead. My only problem with the annual appeal is that it can get a bit coercive with crowds of people pointing out who hasn't complied (and there is a thread on this forum criticising Pellegrini today, even though he did have one on at one point!) - and it's not even the Poppy appeal organisers themselves who do the coercion, they make very clear that it's optional and that the Poppy celebrates freedom (rather than takes it away) - it's the small minded Daily Mail reading individuals who scream in the face of anyone who decides to opt out.

The wearing the poppy should be one of personal choice. Coyle should have his bollocks ripped off if this is true.
I wore a poppy and attended the parade in Sunderland City Centre, because I wanted to, not because I was coerced..

You make a good point there mick and thanks for the input into your circumstances at home <ok>.. I do believe from the early 80's our tabloids have elected governments in this country and will do for years to come. I stood behind a man today in a queue that bought 5 newspapers, get my drift?

If it's true it was probably down to Dave Whelan.

He wanted all football clubs to have a minutes silence for Thatcher fs.

In saying that he would have been aware of McClean not wearing one at Sunderland and the subsequent threats and decided with the player that it was best if he skipped the game, which is pretty cowardly of him as I'm sure McClean would have played.

    <applause>

I would only have a problem with someone who wore an emblem to deride the poppy.
Wearing the poppy has to be down to each and every individual.

Mick while you're here have you fixed your site.
It was getting a mare to post on here for ages.

Its not often that I disagree with you MrRAW, but I do on this occasion. Coyle also has a right to his views and I would think the expression of those views were influenced by a corporate decision by the club to wear shirts with poppies on.

Coyle is the manager and the principal public representative of the club, he opted to act on a employee's misconduct whilst in their place of work.

What misconduct was that in a democracy?
Here's me thinking I'm remembering men and women who died for our right to choose.

Actually MR the poppy was first worn by Americans in the 1920's. The Commomwealth then took it on and now it commemorates all war dead. Not just the UK

I'm not talking about democracy (but you have chosen to make it so), I'm talking about a corporate decision by an employer that their employees wear shirts that have the poppy embroidered on.

If I refuse to wear my uniform because I don't like my epaulettes, I wouldn't just be sent home I would be charged.

It is a personal choice to support/contribute to any cause you wish but if you are required by your employer to wear a particular uniform and you choose not to you should expect the consequences that follow.
