Great display last night but

If Saints can complete a move for Alderweireld it would cast further doubt over the future of Jack Cork, who scored his first ever goal for the club in the Capital One Cup win at the Den last night. Cork had been earmarked as cover for Nathaniel Clyne at right back and Koeman was again quizzed on his future.
“He’s a player of Southampton,” said the Saints boss, who confirmed there were no immediate plans to offer the player a new contract, with his current deal set to expire next summer.
“About him there was a lot of rumours, but Jack is doing very well and wants to stay in Southampton.
“Okay, if there is any possibility for him, and when he is not happy, then he knows the door is open of my office and he can come to talk and then we will see what the best is for everyone in this situation


Personally I hope he stays.
 
He also said, 'He is a great professional.' That is meant as a compliment, but is so often shorthand for not top quality. Being happy to keep him as long as he is happy to stay suggests that he regards Jack as a decent back up but no more. He will be used this season, but (like last season) will not be a regular starter.
 
With all that has happened over this summer, I am absolutely shocked by our managements lack of enthusiasm to keep Jack Cork.
Yet again last night he showed everyone what a good player he is and I am flabbergasted we haven't signed him up for another 2-3 years

Maybe it's because a second manager doesn't think he is has high a quality player as we could have or give us what they want. I like Jack Cork a lot.

One question to consider: why has no team come in with a £10m offer?

That is a good point. Have there been offers...I doubt it would be 10 million is there were. He is a good player to have around, but isn't a must have. The more midfielders we sign the further down the pecking order he goes. His manager saying that he is happy to have him if he wants to stay isn't a ringing endorsement. The best thing for him may be to give his best this season, hoping for game time, then move on a free. He would be bound to get a good move as an experienced PL player without a large price tag.
 
Another player koeman does not rate. Yet he probably helped/did turn he game around last night. I'd be signing him up but then im not management
 
We'd all keep him based on our knowledge of him and loyalty, but we don't know how Koeman sees the team when he has finished building it. It's a big decision to offer another 3 years and is it in Jack's interest. As I said, it may suit him best to go on a free later.

Still only 25, must be worth another 3 years surely? He may not be a starter except in cup games but he definitely offers something different from Victor or Morgan, and last night was more effective than Davis or JWP. And he might just turn into a goal machine now!

As Fran and others say though, it depends who else we sign in this window. If Clasie arrives, that would surely be it, not for Morgan, but for Jack.
 
You would presume someone is is being signed for midfield when he has not been offered a new contract with no intention of being offered one. Koeman doesn't rate him then fair enough. He will sink or swim by his choices

Why are so many people hung up on, not criticizing, suggesting the board/manager are wrong to not offer him a new contract? Fans talk about progression, getting into the top 8 again, signing 'big' players and looking to improve, however the second top flight manager doesn't seem to see him as first choice and lots of people are bemoaning the fact he hasn't got a new contract. I just don't get it other than it is our fans' loyalty to a player we really like. If the boss doesn't rate him, then fine I'm happy to let the manager choose the players. I also don't hear of any top clubs clambering over each other for his signature. He will end up at an also-ran Premier League club if he leaves, not a Spurs/Everton or higher.
 
Every manager has his own ideas about the game, and how he wants it to be played. Some players will fit easily with the new guy's ideas, some won't. That doesn't mean the manager doesn't rate the player, or consider him good enough; it just means that player's particular attributes aren't a perfect fit with that manager's vision.
