I don't think it worked lol ... I remember him riding home on the bonnet of the car rather than in it with his mouth bleeding after he had bitten a beer glass a started to chew the glass, he was a crazy crazy guy.
Speedway star Kelly Moran a Vikings legend sadly no longer with us having died a few years ago at 49 years old. Followed speedway a lot in the 80s , a golden age for the sport with all the top riders in the world based in the UK unlike today where the Polish and Swedish Leagues have overtaken us. Never got to go to the Boulevard as I lived elsewhere in the country and watched the sport elsewhere but that Hull Lada Vikings team was legendary . Would be great to see the Vikings ride again but can't see this city council ever supporting a move to get them back which is a great shame.
It's always sad to hear of the decline of sporting legends. We always seem to remember them at the height of their powers and forget that they are as mortal as we are. I hope Ivan Mauger improves to continue living his well deserved retirement.
Great clip and brings back some fantastic memories, Ivan was I believe the very best to ride for us but there other greats, Jimmy McMillan, Bobby Beaton, Barry Briggs, Egon Muller and Joey Owen who sadly broke his neck in a fall I believe. One of the funniest memories I have from those days was when Tommy Roper shocked us all, he wasn't known as one of our better riders but he absolutely demolished the rest of the field in one particular race, only for us all to discover after the race ended that his throttle had stuck fully open during the race
I loved it when it first started and would gladly go again. Got a mate who lives in Norwich and rode as a pro in two seperate spells, often against Hull and Ivan, who he speaks of with great respect. What tickled me was that I found out that he has never held a bike licence even though he has ridden hundreds of pro-speedway races - he only liked the thrill of speedway. Mind you, he is a great asset on your corporate day- out go-kart team! Some folk just have it.
I used to have a Speedway bike for a while, a converted BSA, we used to race on the old embankment in Anlaby.
Sure remember the Angels, Yardley. Went from Marfleet station to Hedon and positioned myself on a bend so I was showered with dirt having a City scarf wrapped around my lower face. Ended a perfect sporting Saturday as a kid with School football in the morning, City ,with Raich Carter in the afternoon and the Angels at night. On returning to Marfleet finished with a fish/chips supper. Great memories.
