Dunno what he's on about mate, I can't get enough United down me throat!

These are the type of people who complain 'Who wants to watch this ****', when Sky are showing Dunfermline vs Arbroath.

Bishop Auckland are probably historically the most success amateur side in the country but the story I think you're referring to here is West Auckland FC. They sent some miners to an international football competition back in the early 20th century and won it, then they won it again a couple of years later. It was back when the FA refused to send an England team so West Auckland went, and won. England may have only won the world cup once but West Auckland won it twice!!

There were only a handful of other teams and they were from local clubs rather than nations but I suspect the first few legitimate world cups were a bit like that too.

    From wiki so judge yourself:
West Auckland Town F.C. is famously the 'Home of the First World Cup', as its football team were the winners of the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy, one of the first international footballing competitions, in its two initial years (1909 and 1911) and were therefore, by the rules of the competition, awarded the trophy to keep in perpetuity.

Last time I checked, we are a capitalist based society where, Shock and bloody Horror, ££, $$ and who you know counts for everything. Them who are successfully or know successful people live it up, those who dont get ****ed. Welcome to the world.

I'd call it natural selection, it's governed human kind since the dawn of man.

I admit, not everybody is born equal, but there is no way people are denied opportunities in this country. I know plenty of self made multi-millionaires.

Being part of the rat race, for most is just a result of complacency and acceptance of their circumstances.

Trust someone who know plenty of self made millionaires to say that, ya **** ;)

Seriously though, bet social "networking" (talking to the right people, getting introduced through business contacts etc) counted a lot in their success.

One of them was left on the doorstep of an orphanage by his parents as a small child, he developed siege mentality and now owns a huge electronics company. He claims to have been helped by god... obviously I won't attribute any success to that guy, but I guess it doesn't harm anybody.

Another took over his failing father's bankrupted small company and rebuilt it, he went to China and used his common sense.

Lots of people do get help, definitely and I agree it's more who you know that what you know... I'm just not an excuse person!

    I am a **** though <laugh>

4 or 5 games get chosen as live every round of the cup. They pick (generally) the most attractive games of that round or a potential cup upset. Salford v Hartlepool probably comes under both of those brackets so it is one of the live games of the round. No big deal.

I really hope that Salford beat Hartlepool . . . . that would be brilliant (unless we get them in the third round, of course) :emoticon-0100-smile

I used to 'care' for 'Pools until one of their fans, and my mate (who I gave a job 'the best job that I've ever had' to) 'stabbed me in the back' . . . . fat bastard (I wish that you could read this, Chris Walker) :steam:

    Thanks for the info.
Had a bit more time today so did a little online browsing of it myself. I'd combined 2 stories into one. The one my dad always told me about Bishop Auckland giving Man U some players after the Munich air disaster is 100% true. As is the fact that they gave us our floodlights for a new ground!
In addition, about 20 years ago when we were in danger of going bust due to an opposition player suing us over a bad tackle, Alex Ferguson sent a Man U XI to play us to raise money! Like I say, I wish I knew more about it but the history of Bishop Auckland, in particular it's relationship with Man U, is incredible.

The World Cup part, you are quite right, is WEST Auckland rather than Bishop. <ok>

Some great history. Shame the club languishes so far down the pyramid now, you would think a mini-millionaire would see the potential in getting them up to the football league. Think when we got our new stadium a lot of people were expecting us to push on a bit.
