In the days of David Dein, we were top of the game for transfer dealings, since he left we've been like a floundering fish in the market. The lack of negotiators, plus the stadium move precipitated the youth project, which to a greater extent has been a success. I think this move is now the next step for Arsenal. Media are reporting that Kronke will make ã40m available for transfers this close season. People have criticised Wenger for not strengthening, but he has been a shrewd custodian and has resisted the Chelsea / City throw as much money around and see what sticks approach, which for us would have led to financial ruin. I think this time around though we will see some serious money being spent.
I'd not be surprised to see Dein return. Given his working relationship with Wenger would be a shrewd move for Arsenal.
Yeah - I think Dein has burned his bridges with the Arsenal board, as long as Hill-Wood is still Chairman anyway.
Don't get me wrong though, I'd love to see Dein back at the club, he is Arsenal through and through. I think once Usmanov is off the scene and Hill-Wood has eventually moved on, he'll be back. But it won't be for a few years yet.
Personally I think Dein was just on a big ego trip.He only got involved with Arsenal to feather his own nest which he eventually did
Didn't Dein sell all his shares to the colossal **** that is Usmanov? Now why would a man who 'is arsenal through and through' do something like that?
Because he thought that he'd have more clout being part of Red and White holdings than he would as a lone ranger - massive mistake on Dein's part, Usmanov is like a leper at Arsenal now.
Looking at various forums and blogs, the consensus from Arsenal fans seems to favour Kroenke's takeover of Arsenal. The part i have difficulty with is going back to 2005 when the Glazers bought Man Utd.I remember Arsenal fans at the 2005 FA Cup Final taunting Man Utd fans with chants of "USA USA",flashing wads of fake dollars and wearing Glazer masks. We have taunted them by calling them MAN USA and refering to their stadium as the "Devil Bowl"We pissed ourselves laughing at the debt incured by the Glazers,we also did the same thing with Liverpool and the Hicks and Gillete debacle. We are now celebrating a yank buying our club who according to todays Guardian has made no promises not to use club money to service the debt of buying Arsenal. How times have changed for us Arsenal fans
That's what I'm getting at. Since Dein left you haven't had a sole figurehead who had the power and ability to make quick decisions. If Kroenke gets full control then you will get that single powerbase back again. Simply having one person with the power to say yes or no to transfers, and with no oversight, is worth a lot in the transfer market. Fans are fickle. City fans were among those complaining about Chelsea and United ruining the game with their money until they got some money of their own. Liverpool fans complained that Americans knew nothing about football until they got some American owners they liked. And everyone complains about dodgy refereeing decisions until they start going in their favour
Yeah, but in 2005 we were doing OK trophy wise. Still, it's not the owners fault. Wenger's an incredible manager, but his philosophy on signing players needs to change.
goonercymraeg I don't think all our fans are celebrating the takeover, most of us don't have a good idea of what this will actually change for us and only a few have let the headlines about 'transfer war-chest' get to them.
