Nor does China want to write off the billions (trillions?) owed to them by the US. The situation isn't ideal for either side, but China has most to lose.

I've no doubt, but, if China and US came to serious problems and US refuses to pay the debt or even just the interest to China, China could stand to lose a huge sum of money.

So Russia militarised it's border with North Korea over the weekend. Presumably a threat to the US that it won't let the US take N. Korea (Russia obviously won't want to be circled by NATO).

It will be interesting... IF the US invades North Korea, will Russia really help defend Korea or is this a bluff.

If war breaks out in Korea would Russia also pre-emptively move on their Western front towards Europe. Surely Russia isnt so stupid to provoke a war with the west it can't win.

By the sounds of it Russia wants consultation by the US if any military action is to be taken. Impression therefore is that Russia could use NK as a bargaining chip for its expansion in other areas, ie over the status of somewhere like Crimea. When it comes down to it I think Russia would ditch NK if it helped their own ambitions, and as you say don't think Russia would be stupid enough to risk over the likes of NK (although their stance in Syria might suggest otherwise)

Only if they use a neutron bomb though, as they have relatively little fallout. :emoticon-0143-smirk

In light of the recent events in Korea, the French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from "Run" to "Hide." The only two higher levels in France are "Collaborate" and "Surrender." The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France's white flag factory, effectively paralysing the country's military capability.
The English are also feeling the pinch in relation to recent events in Korea and have therefore raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved." Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross." The English have not been "A Bit Cross" since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies nearly ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorised from "Tiresome" to "A Bloody Nuisance." The last time the British issued a "Bloody Nuisance" warning level was in 1588, when threatened by the Spanish Armada.
The Scots have raised their threat level from "**** Off" to "Let's get the Bastards." They don't have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for the last 300 years.
Italy has increased the alert level from "Shout Loudly and Excitedly" to "Elaborate Military Posturing." Two more levels remain: "Ineffective Combat Operations" and "Change Sides."
The Germans have increased their alert state from "Disdainful Arrogance" to "Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs." They also have two higher levels: "Invade a Neighbour" and "Lose."
Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual; the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels.
The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy.
Australia, meanwhile, has raised its security level from "No worries" to "She'll be alright, Mate." Two more escalation levels remain: "Crikey! I think we'll need to cancel the Barbie this weekend!" and "The Barbie is cancelled." So far no situation has ever warranted use of the final escalation level

So you know how China defends it's occupation of East Turkestan and Tibet by saying "historically they used to be part of China" and they claim to own the entire China Sea islands (despite many other nations being closer) because they say Chinese sailors used to visit them.

I just learnt that apparently Xi told Trump that Korea was historically Chinese too.

Given how Tibet and East Turkestan are currently occupied for the same reason, it makes one wonder if China eyes the Korean peninsular and was telling Trump "all your Korea are belong to us".

Understandably, politicians in South Korea are appalled to hear Xi refer to Korea as being part of historical China (they did have to pay tribute to China to not be burnt to the ground at various times).
