I think the rivalry stems down to a number of reasons, mainly image and portrayal of the clubs though: Grafting Northerners v Flash "Cockney" Southerners Past v Present/Future Partisan Local old school fanbase v Newer modern fanbase Fat Bullied at kid type of guy as a manager v The handsome suave charasmatic manager Emphasis on Europe v Emphasis on Domestic Politically Left Central v Politically Right Central Celtic v Rangers etc. I think you also have to factor in the insecurities of both sets of fans. Firstly, Liverpool fans that have grown up in an era of success therefore believe they have the divine right to be at the top, that said most Liverpool fans I know are not begrudging of City and Chelsea's newfound riches and success partly due to the fact it stops United dominating. Secondly, you have Chelsea fans who have grown up in an era of mediocrity (those under 50 but over 25 anyway) who are fighting for acceptance. Overall I think it's just two massively insecure fanbases going at it, trying to be as objective as I can
I couldn't give a flying **** about them. I think it was magnified as we use to play each other 8 times a season in all the cups, but, they are no longer the biggest moneybags "buy the title team" in the country, and I can't muster anything of anything for them. When you have Gooners {we know everything about football, including that no-one plays as good as arsenal} and yids [we're a top 4 team now, and you're ****e], it is hard to get excited by a bunch of glory hunters who were supporting man U, 8 years ago...
You may 1 very pertinent point and 1 very silly point. Firstly, you don't understand what being a REDMAN truly is. We don't just believe that we have a divine right to be at the top, we KNOW it to be true. Secondly, every REDMAN is firmly grounded and therefore insecurity does not even come into the equation.
I grew up in a city which is split down red and blue lines, went to a school which was half red half blue, have mates who are reds and a few who are bitters (try and keep them to a minimum obviously). The rivalries there from the day your born.
I don't like Chelsea because of two players and the unimaginative fans. Terry and Lampard are the two players, used to be Robben and Drogba too, can't say I am a fan of Cech either but he doesn't annoy me enough for this list! The reason I say the fans is because of the silly plastic flags, stealing songs rather than making your own up and booing a manager before he has even got into his office! Edit: However, I am wanting Chelsea to win the league this year but that is more a combination of me disliking the Manchester clubs more and my love for Rafa
