W Here the hell is all the Chez criticism coming from? His only major weakness is long shots and I don't see why people have suddenly decided to slate him.
He had one bad game against Chelsea so they all decided to come out of hibernation. It's been a while since Sir Chesney played badly, and I think some people have been itchin' for some bitchin'. It went silent for a while when he was playing well, but at the start of the season there were plenty of people wanting a new keeper. Now they get their chance to bitch and moan once more.
And he wasn't even that bad. Ramires made a "smart trip" for the penalty. The Mata show might have been savable but 9 times out of 10 it would have been a goal. And Chesney did all that he could for the Ba chance
His only weakness is long shots? He has plenty of weaknesses, and most of them are related to bad decision making, and cockiness. Most are easily corrected but he keeps doing it in every game, win, loss or draw. This season he's been particularly nutty in putting the ball back into play in unsafe positions, and when our side is crowded by opposition players. That's just unnecessary added pressure to our back 4.
I remember, Arteta, Sagna, Gibbs and even Podolski doing that, but not Szczesny. If he has, then it's never cost us, which shows it was never really that "nutty". Also, where does the "cockiness" criticism come from? Is it one of those videos from the early days when he talks about his upbringing and his move to Arsenal? I don't recall him being "cocky" in a game. I think it's just an excuse to criticise based on something off the pitch.
No, Most people are saying that Szczesny is a decent keeper, so they don't agree with your assessment.
I think after what happened in the Euro's, even Chensey's confidence must have been low and he also had a few injuries to get over. But in the last few months he has been solid and does his job well, plus he is so young for a keeper and will only improve over time. The only part of his game that really worries and gets me nervous is his kicking.
Except he isn't measured against "decent". I would say he's a decent keeper too, he's not of the quality to be first choice though. Well with the quality of our current squad maybe he is.
I'm with SJW on this. Szczesny had been solid and done his job, but I also share the view that his kicking is pretty weak. For a GK though, if there's one area for improvement, then it should be a fairly easy issue to work on. I'd rather that than him being weak on any of the crucial areas.
Didnt see the game last night but heard he had a howler for one of the goals. A Man U fan at work said we should be looking to replace him and I've never mentioned my thoughts on Szczesney to him. Was he really that bad?
He tried to copy Lehmann when he gifted that goal to Fulham on the opening day of the season years ago.. He gifted Jordan Henderson a free shot at an empty goal as well but luckily he missed
He played alright actually. A great save in the lead up to the Suarez goal. Also came out well and stopped another good Liverpool chance, allowing our defenders to get back. A 7/10 performance, although his form has been rocky of late.
He made a crucial save against Brighton too. He was not at fault at all for the goals last night and as you point out, he made a good save on the first one before our defense conspired to hand the chance back to Liverpool. He's by no means the finished article yet and needs to work on his kicking, punching and cutting out the risky and unnecessary decisions. But a top keeper in the making
